When on speakerphone, can you send and receive simultaneously, or does it act like a two-way radio, where when your sending, you can't receive?  Thanks.

I need a phone for conference calls that will allow me to mute the mic only, leaving the incoming audio alone. In some phones the mute function mutes everything -- I want to be able to listen in continuously, but be able to turn my mic off and on. Can you confirm that the mute on this phone mutes only the mic?

Yes the mute button only mutes the mic ~ 90%. Loud sounds may get through!

how to record outgoing message ?

The AT&T CL2909 Corded Phone is a basic low end phone w/ lg easy to see
buttons and a 14 key quick dial memory for often used numbers.  It does not
have the capability to record either an outgoing message or an incoming
message.  The display in not illuminated and viewing can be difficult in poor
light.  That said, the display will show the time, date, last number called and the phone #'s stored in memory.  Also the options to set up the phone.  If you
pay for Caller ID from your phone provider, the screen may show the callers
phone #,  the # of old calls and new calls. This phone is not line powered and
requires 4 AA batteries to operate properly.  It does have a speaker phone, 
call waiting, ringer volume,  sound volume, and mute, hold, flash, and redial function. See the owner's guide for other options and programming.
