Yes, it detects gold. We even pulled out several pieces of my gold jewelry to make sure. It seems to be a decent & sturdy detector, finding coins, nails, screws, bottle caps, even a spoon buried about 5 inches in the dirt. My son got it for his 7 th birthday and found it easy to use on his own. I love that it can be adjusted for height changes, has an easily read display and adjustable sound. He's taken it camping, around the neighborhood as well as the beach (only on the sand). Hope that helps.
