Hello:  Is this the correct cable to use if I want to use an HDTV as a monitor?  I believe the ports are correct.

Your HDTV will use the HDMI connector side of this cable but the other connector is a display port type connector. Your PC needs to have a display port type connector type to accept the plug. My Lenovo laptop has this type of connector. If your PC has an HDMI connector then this will not work and there are several sizes of HDMI connectors too. You would need to refer to  the owner's manual to see what type of high definition video output connector your PC uses.

Does this combo cable carry sound as well or just video?

I think I answered this before, but it may have been a different person.
This cable functions with both audio and video; the quality will be of that of a normal HDMI to HDMI cable, just one end is adapted to a display port. I have 4 of them running an infinity eye desktop on a asus radeon hd 7970. its beautiful.

Description says: from DP (PC) to HDMI (monitor), not vice versa. Can be one direction cable, which means no signal from HDMI (PC)  to DP (monitor). Most DP to HDMI cables are not  bidirectional. It's better to look for a specific HDMI to DP cable.

This is a passive cable that supports both audio and video. This cable is currently in use between a computer and a flat screen HD television and works perfectly.

Will this function both ways? I need to connect hdmi source (laptop) to display port monitor.

The terminal ends on this cable are very different. This cable was purchased for a desktop all in one computer to add an accessory display monitor. For a laptop, I think you need a different type of cable and this connects to your monitor with a separate adapter. Hope that helps.

This very much depends on the computer you are connecting to the cable.  Since I used it for a 1080p device, I can not be sure.  It is true that most DP devices and cables support the data rates necessary for 4K, so you will probably be OK. More importantly though, the devices involved MUST support HDMI over display port for this cable to work properly.  This is probably more important than even the resolution.  HDMI and DP are different from each other electrically, and in how the signals are encoded. Even though most DP devices do support this mode, you should check your video card and monitor documentation to be sure, or you could have compatibility problems.

I have a 15-pin female (blue trapezoid) port on both an HDTV and my laptop.

Do they make cables with 15-point male ends on both ends?

And would this allow me to use the HDTV as a monitor for the laptop?

Thanks in advance for any help and thank you for help on my other question.  I don't think I have the right port on my laptop to connect with an HDMI cable.

You're looking for a VGA cable.

Search VGA male to male and you'll have tons of results less than $10.

And yes. If your TV has the connection on the back then it will accept your laptop. Sound will not play through the tv as VGA only outputs video, not sound (HDMI does both).

I've been using it as a computer to TV connection at 1080p. I don't think it's rated to go any higher than a 1920 x 1080 resolution.
