Does this come with a soft or hard cover?

This machine comes with a soft cover. I just love my Brother SE400 and I am sure you will too.

is this product brand new?

Yes, this product is new, but Brothers sewing machines has been around for many years. I am very happy with my new Brother SE400 Computerized Sewing and Embroidery machine. I have not tried the embroidery yet but as soon as I have time I will and I am sure that I will love it.

Is the machine computer friendly to download designs?

Yes, also depending on who you DL from. (.pes files)
