Step 1 Open Firefly.
Log in to Adobe Firefly with your Adobe ID or create a free account if you don’t have one. Open the Firefly Video module by clicking Generate Video. Select the Edit tab.
Step 2 Access and add your videos.
Drag and drop a video clip from your device or from Adobe cloud storage. Clicking Adobe cloud storage will open your Generation History, where you can browse your previous video outputs.
Step 3 Make prompt-based edits and upscale.
Stay in the Edit tab and choose from the Quick Actions menu on the left to make prompt-based edits or upscale the video. If those are the only changes you want to make, skip to Step 9 and download your file.
Step 4 Open the Firefly video editor for more extensive edits.
To add more clips and continue editing, click Modify in the top left of your video and select Open in the Firefly video editor. Now you can drag more generated clips or uploaded files from the Media panel onto the primary timeline track. To upload a new clip, select Your Media and click Add. Stack additional shots on upper tracks for cutaways, overlays, or titles.
Step 5 Trim and split your sequence.
Hover over the edge of a clip to trim it. Use the Split tool to cut a clip where desired. When you move clips around, the main track will help keep your story tight.
Step 6 Add text.
Open the Text panel and choose a template. Edit in the canvas and refine in Properties to change font, size, color, and more.
Step 7 Add audio.
Drag music, voiceover, or effects to an audio track. Select a clip and use Properties ? Volume to balance levels. Nudge timing so beats land on cuts.
Step 8 Generate new clips.
Open Generate in the right panel. Enter a prompt, set duration and aspect ratio, and generate. Your result will appear in Generation History — drag it straight into the timeline to extend your story.
Step 9 Export your video.
Click Download and choose your format to save your story locally to your device.

What is an AI video editor?
An AI video editor is a tool that uses artificial intelligence to automate and assist with video editing tasks that would traditionally require manual effort, such as trimming and cutting clips, making scene-aware clip adjustments, and adding text or audio. Instead of using complex controls, you can describe what you want in a prompt and the AI video editor makes the edit. The Adobe Firefly video editor offers all of these capabilities with no technical skills required.
What AI video editing capabilities are included in Adobe Firefly?
Firefly offers two options for editing videos with AI:
- In the Edit tab of Generate Video, you can upscale your video or write a prompt to guide edits. This includes scene-aware video transformations — you can change characters, costumes, and objects, or redirect action in your scene using text prompts, first and last frames, and character references.
- In the timeline-based Firefly video editor (currently in beta and available on desktop), you can trim and arrange clips and generate video and audio directly within the editing workflow. You also have access to your Firefly generation history, making it easy to bring together generated video, images, voice, and soundtracks. Text templates and editable text properties are available as well for creating more compelling content.
Do I need video editing experience to use the AI video editor tools in Adobe Firefly?
No prior editing experience is required. The AI video editor tools in Firefly are intuitive for anyone to get started and assemble their clips, directly in their web browser.
On what devices can I use the Adobe Firefly video editor?
The Firefly Video Model (for video generation and prompt-based editing) is available on desktop browsers at firefly.adobe.com and on the Firefly mobile app for iOS and Android. You can generate video clips using Text to Video and Image to Video from your phone or computer, and your creations sync across devices through Generation History.
The Firefly video editor is currently available only on desktop (macOS and Windows) using the Chrome browser. Other browsers like Edge, Firefox, and Safari may not support all features yet.
What types of videos can I make with the Adobe Firefly AI video editor?
The Firefly video editor supports a wide range of creative projects, including social media content (vertical, square, and horizontal formats), tutorials, product reviews, interview and podcast cuts, B-roll sequences, and explainer videos. You can combine AI-generated clips, your own uploaded footage, and Adobe Stock assets on a multi-track timeline, then add text, voiceovers, soundtracks, and sound effects to create polished, ready-to-share videos. Use Quick Cut to automatically assemble a first draft from your footage, or edit by transcript for dialogue-driven content like interviews and talking heads.
Can I use the videos I create with the Adobe Firefly AI video editor in commercial projects?
Yes. The Firefly AI Video Model is trained on licensed content and public domain materials where copyright has expired, making it safe to use AI generated video in commercial projects. Note: Commercial usage eligibility depends on the model used. Partner models may have different usage terms.
Can I generate new video clips in the Adobe Firefly video editor?
There are two ways to generate new video clips:
- Generate Video — Use Text to Video or Image to Video in the Firefly web app to generate clips, then access them in the Generation History panel.
- Generate Media panel in the video editor — Open the Generate Media panel directly within the editor, enter a text prompt, and add your new clip straight to the timeline without leaving your workspace. Both methods produce video clips you can drag and drop or export into your project.
Is the Adobe Firefly video editor free to use?
Firefly offers a free AI video generator with a limited number of uses through a Creative Cloud or Firefly plan. If you need more than what’s included in your plan, you can continue creating by upgrading or purchasing additional generative credits.
