I am trying to connect a Dell desktop (with some open USB ports on the back) to an HP Color LaserJet 4600 printer. The printer has a parallel port and an RJ45. Will this cable work?

No. The HP LaserJet has a builtin ethernet adapter, which needs to be connected to an ethernet (cat5, cat6e, etc) cable. The RJ45 plug will FIT, but the printer will not understand the serial information that this cable carries.
