Can this be used as just an external hard drive, not for gaming?

Yes, I use it as a regular external hard drive mostly for RAW photo editing. It's just marketed for gaming because it's exceptionally fast for an HDD drive (250MB/s read/write) that will allow you to comfortably run applications and games off of it. Also because games are huge these days. Considering it's got effectively half the read speed of a SATA SSD, it's actually quite an excellent value.

Can you play PS5 games directly off of the 8TB?

No. Per Sony. You can store the game installs on it, but you have to copy them back to the PS5 internal storage before you can play them. You can however play PS4 games directly off of it as far as I know.

Not sure why you're trying to open it.  I love mine and it works great for the purpose I bought it for.  But to answer your question, I was able to extract one screw with a craftsman T15 Torx screw driver.  Hope that you find this help full.  The screw actually has an Allen head on it though, I was unable to find one of mine that would work/fit it.  If you're tearing it apart because of the fan, I would HIGHLY SUGGEST buying a "Noctua Fan" if you can find one in the proper size.  These fans are absolutely amazing!!!  Little price-y but, you only get what you pay for when it comes to cooling fans!  Awesome warranty, lower power consumption then a stock fan, quiet and so on.  I hope I fixed your dilemma.

Will a type C cable work with this drive (using a type C port)  for faster transfer speeds?

The WD Black 8TB D10 Game Drive uses a USB 3.2 Gen 1, Micro B interface, and it comes with a USB Type-A to Micro-B cable. There is no information indicating compatibility with a Type C cable for faster transfer speeds.
