I would like to see installation instructions before purchasing. Additionally, is this system compatible with Heatpumps?

If you go on their web site you should be able to see this. I did chat with a customer service rep and they were very helpful. They are oriented to help home owners do the install on their own. I have had mine a short time, but like it.

Any reason to upgrade from 2nd Gen?

Not really. It has a slightly bigger screen and is slightly slimmer. The only real reason would be for compatibility with the Nest Temperature Sensors.
