how long will battery last before having to charge it?

The battery installed in this unit is not replaceable. It is an internal battery that is charged by the power line running from the wall. The reason for this is to allow installation of the Nest 3rd gen in older houses without a dedicated second power line to power the thermostat. In older house when the AC unit is on, the power line in older houses does not carry enough current to power the thermostat and the controller on the AC unit at the same time, thus the battery.

does this auto heat and cool a home?

Yes, you can set a boundary for the home to keep the temperature within and the nest does so nicely. e.g: We set ours from 68-71, if it goes over 71 it cools, under 68 and it heats.
