IS YOUR HOME COMPATIBLE? Identify your home's voltage. Only low voltage systems are compatible with Honeywell Home Smart Thermostats. Here are some signs you have a low voltage system:
Do you have low voltage in your home?
- Your home has a furnace in the basement, garage, bathroom, etc.
- You either have central air conditioning, a heat pump, boiler or split system.
- Your home contains heating vents along the floors of your rooms.
- Changing your thermostat affects multiple rooms.
Is your wiring compatible?
Power off your system by using a switch or turning off power at the fuse box. Carefully remove your existing thermostat or cover from the wall. On most thermostats, you can take off the thermostat by grasping and gently pulling. Some thermostats may have screws, buttons or clasps.
What you should typically see is 18-gauge solid core wire. The most common configuration is five wires; however, you could see as few as two, and as many as ten.
What are signs you have an incompatible system?
Here are some signs you may have a high voltage or line voltage system in your home.
1. Your thermostat has thick black or red wires connected by nuts.
2. Your thermostat is labeled 120v or 240v.
3. Your thermostat has stranded wires.
If you see any of these things, this smart thermostat will not work with your wiring. Honeywell Home has thermostats that do work with line voltage systems; however, this thermostat is not compatible.
Do you have a C-Wire?
C-Wires are required on all Honeywell Home Smart Thermostats.
- To find an unused C-Wire, you will need to remove your existing thermostat wall plate. Look at the bundle of wires coming from the wall. Note: You may have to pull the bundle of wires out from the wall to find the unused wire.
- If you do not have a C-Wire or extra wire in the bundle but your old thermostat does use Y and G wires, you will need to purchase a C-Wire Adapter for this Smart Thermostat to be compatible with your home.
