Yes it works on my window 10 PC,s. But I would suggest keeping a old Windows 7 PC to use also to burn information onto a portable hard drive for safety.

Do you need to purchase software to convert the files?

The files I had on old 3.5s were mostly old doc files from MS Word of versions past. I didn't need to purchase anything additional to the drive in order to move files between my computer and the drive. If you need to read a very old unrecognized format (which midday likely will never happen), the drivers are typically floating around the net for free

does it work with a Mac?

I don't have a MAC, but I do use it with my Linux Mint OS machine that has a USB port, so I would think if your using OS 10 or higher with a USB port, it would probably work. For the price I think you cannot go wrong. This device has been helpful in recovering old programs and data.
