there is humming in the background.  The voice quality doesn't seem as good as the old cell phone I was calling from.  I tried every volume level.  Is that normal?

I purchased this Panasonic cordless phone system last year.  The voice quality is as good or in fact is better than any phone I have ever had.  I feel the voice quality is excellent.
My old cordless phones had a very slight faint barely audible hum which was made much worse by proximity to my wireless computer modem/router or when I used the microwave oven.  My base unit was in the kitchen.  This Panasonic phone system never has any hum.  The base unit is still in my kitchen.  I have been very pleased and rate this system excellent in every category.
You either have something unusual going on that is affecting your phone or you have a defective unit.

Does this phone have true HD?

Sorry.  I don't know what "true HD" is unless it's high definition video or audio.

I bought this phone system almost a year ago and it has functioned perfectly and I am completely satisfied.  Best wireless home phone system I ever had.

Audio quality with and without the speaker phone is very good.
I can carry the phone outside and it works fine with very good audio quality.

Depending upon your needs and expectations, e.g., how far from the base you wish to use the handsets, and what is within this distance, e.g., steel beams, you may wish to consider purchasing a Panasonic KX-TGA405B Range Extender for Dect 6.0 Plus phones.  If you are going to purchase the Panasonic KX-TGE233B Expandable Digital Cordless Answering System - 3 Handsets, I recommend that you do so first and try using the cordless handsets before deciding upon whether you need the Range Extender.
