how long generally do batteries last?

The ones I purchased went overseas with a friend, but I had one from several years ago and as I recall the batteries lasted long enough that I was more concernedf about them leaking than I was about them losing power. It was a fine phone and I only replaced it because I  needed one with a higher contrast display.

As always, battery life is partially a factor of battery type (for instance, I have a wall clock that runs for months on a Lithium-Ion battery and about 2 weeks on a Nickel-Netal-Hydride one) I'm afraid I don't recall which lasted longest in this phone.
