Parallels 8 *IS* compatible with Mavericks, you just have to download the latest version from Parallels.

To quote the info on their support page..."Service Alert for Parallels Desktop 8 Users Upgrading to Mavericks – October 23, 2013!

If you intend to upgrade to Mac OS X Mavericks (10.9), and are running Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac, you must be running the most recent update (build 8.0.18608). Select “Check for Updates” in the Parallels Desktop menu..."

I have an 5 year old Mac Pro Mac running OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) and Parallels 8. The guest operating systems include Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion), Windows 8 Enterprise, Ubuntu and Chrome OS and everything seems to work ok. Mainly use the guest operating systems for testing, so they're not put under a lot of stress. Since its an older machine, the performance could be better, but that's due to the machine and not Parallels. Have Parallels 9 running on a high end laptop (2.6GHz quad core i7, 16GB RAM, 1GB VRAM, 500GB SSD) and the guest operating systems run very well. Anyway, was running Virtual Box on the old Mac Pro machine and switching over to Parallels 8 really helped the performance. The machine only has 4GB of RAM, 512MB VRAM, and SATA II hard drives.

When using Parallels 8 for Mac, should I get a 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows 7?

The manual states "It is also recommended that you use the 64-bit version of Windows, but if you want to use the
32-bit version, deselect 64-bit Windows version. When ready, click Continue."

Does this distribution support free update to next version?

No.  They offer upgrades at a discounted price but not a free update to the next version.  I am using 8.0 with no problems on osx maverick if that is the reason you want to upgrade.

I wish they had a version that didn't come on a CD/DVD.  I brought a rMBP, but I don't have a SuperDrive.   Not very bright.  :(   Anyone know if they have a digital version of this?

You can share another computer's DVD drive.  If you have another computer on your home (or work) network you can access the other computer's DVD drive.  Google "OS X Mavericks: Use another computer’s DVD or CD drive" - it  links to the Apple knowledge base article PH14195

Parallels version 9 is designed for Mavericks (the latest OSX) and is available as a try/buy download on the Parallels website but it costs more.

Newegg sells the CD/DVD version 9 on this site.

Does this version of Parallels come with a free upgrade to Parallels 9? Upgraded to Mavericks and noticed that my Parallels loads but will not load Windows 7 since I loaded Mavericks.

No, it doesn't come with an upgrade to my knowledge. I've gotten a lot solicitation to pay $49 to upgrade. I have also upgradeded to mavericks and my Win 7 works as it did prior to Mavericks. No issues.

From what I read yesterday, a purchase date of 10/31/2013 was the free upgrade cutoff.

Yes it works.  If you have a Mac without cd drive you may need to download a copy and use your key to install.  However I'm not sure if they still have 8 for download.

Be sure to download the latest version available on the Parallels website and install using supplied key (only the latest version is supported)

It should work because you will have maverick.  You may be able to download it and install because the air does not have a cd drive.  You can also use a usb external drive which should also work.
