I am a bit confused, will this only run at 144hz with dual link dvi? I am a bit new at this but right next to standard refresh 60hz there it says in parenthesis HDMI. Will this not run at 144 hz with an HDMI cable?

Correct 144hz data can only run over dual link DVI. the bandwidth requirements are much to high and no other standard to this date can support that bandwidth need.

HDMI is for home TVs that you want a "1 cable does all". It isn't for high end bandwidth like 144hz
I am sure some day HDMI will come out with a higher standard that will support 144hz+

Even Display ports miss the mark, the new 1.3 standard is VERY fast and high bandwidth and would support it, maybe they will do a refresh to all 144Hz monitors and update them to DP1.3?

Question 2

I like the specs on this monitor (refresh rate, contrast ratio, etc.) but I don't need all the "gaming" features.  My business is working on photographs and video, so I need a very good monitor with excellent contrast, fast refresh rates, etc.  Can you recommend one similar to this Philips?

This is a TN panel.  If color accuracy is important, which I suspect it is in your profession, I couldn't recommend any TN panels based on color reproduction alone.  You would be better served looking for an IPS panel.
