Does this drive only read/write BluRay or also DVD and CD?

I just burned multiple single and dual layer DVDs a few days ago using two of these in a six burner "array" built solely for the purpose of being able to burn any optical disc my heart desires. I think this particular burner may work on wood and stone as well although I probably won't have a need for that.

Question 2

I want to get this drive for a brand new build. Will it allow me to install windows right out of the box, or do I need to get a non-OEM drive?

I was very surprised when I installed this BD product.  I didn't need any software.  I used W7-64.  Window recognized the BD and all driver were installed.  I haven't had any problem with this product.  I have burned many DVD and Blu-ray disc without any problem.

Question 3

Product came without DC input electrical power connector. Should there be an electrical supply?

I don't believe they had an electric power connectors supplied. The computers power supply has three or four power plugs running in parallel on one power cable. There is usually more than one of these cables to supply power to hard drives and burners. If you find yourself short one you can look on New Egg under power cable splitter, or y. I think they run between $5 - $10.
I didn't need one, because I was just swapping a reader for a burner.
I now have the Pioneer and a Lite-on Blu-ray burner. The Pioneer is quieter, loads faster, reads faster, and burns very well.

Question 4

Does this product come with all the cabling necessary for install?

NO. It's a sata drive. more than likely you're going to remove the existing CD/DVD burner and replace it with this one. This one does everything your old drive does except for light scribe, but this is on the way out. Now if you have plan "B" where you have another SATA connector on your mother board, simply go to a computer store and get a SATA data cable. Then you will have 2 drives that burn disks. There are always extra power connectors laying around.

does this unit come with a usb cable? is this unit usable for uploading software into a computer from a cd or dvd?

THIS IS AN INTERNAL DRIVE. ONLY EXTERNAL DRIVES USE A USB CABLE.  YOUR COMPUTER WILL HAVE TO HAVE AN EXTRA DRIVE SPOT IF YOU ARE ADDING THIS AS A SECOND DRIVE. IF YOU ARE REPLACING THE DRIVE ALREADY IN YOUR COMPUTER YOU WILL BE OK. IF YOU HAVE TWO DRIVES YOU WILL NEED A SATA CABLE TO CONNECT IT PLUS THE POWER CABLE THAT IS IN THE COUMPUTER TO FINISH HOOKING IT UP. KEEP IN MIND THIS WILL PLAY CD'S, DVD'S PLUS BURN BLU RAY DISCS BUT TO PLAY BLU RAY DISCS YOUR COMPUTER NEEDS A HDMI CABLE OUT. IT WILL ACT JUST LIKE A REGULAR CD/DVD DRIVE TO TRANSFER INFORMATION BUT NO SOFTWARE COMES WITH IT TO BURN BLU RAY DISC'S. YOU WILL HAVE TO BUY THAT SEPERATE.

Is this really a blue-ray writer ? I can't seem to find any reviews & what comes with it ?

Yes it is a Blu-Ray writer.  I bought one recently and have had success writing dual-layer (50GB discs) with it. Windows 8.1 has native support to write to this drive, but there are plenty of free third party software options as well (CDBurnerXP, for instance).  It's OEM, which means nothing comes with it: no cables, no software (no Blu-Ray movie playback; you'll have to buy that if you need it!).  It was truly plug and play for me though, no driver installation required, and I began using it immediately after I turned my computer back on. No fuss.

How many layers will this drive write?

The specs say it will write dual layer DVD-R and DVD+R.

It mentions BD-R (recordable) ver. 2.0 and BD-RE (recordable erasable) ver. 3.0 standards while it wasn't until ver. 3.0 and ver. 4.0 respectively that multi-layer was added to those standards, so it seems the answer is "no" for multilayer Blu-ray writing with this drive.

where can I get software for this?  Bought it and no plug in play or software was in the box.
BDR-209DBK firmware cant be find on any site.

I use the Cyberlink Media Suite. I believe Nero 2014 also works. This software is available online at Newegg and other popular online retailers. Alternatively, you can return your drive to Newegg (at a cost) and buy Pioneer's other model that comes with Cyberlink software and costs much more.

Question 10

Some reviews say it is "whisper quiet" some say it is loud.I am trying to replace a loud LG unit. Is it loud or "whisper quiet"?

Personally have never heard the thing, but I'll be honest, I mainly use my PS4 for media, the BR drive in the PC is just for data and records keeping.  Whenever I set up a burn I typically have about 9,000,000 other things going on, so I'm rarely in the room.
