does this work for a desktop?

No guarantees, but very very probably. Comes with a little USB bluetooth dongle and you download the Plantronics (now Poly) "hub" software. I've used it with my Dell desktop as well as an HP laptop and multiple docking stations. Great set of headphones, I love them.

Does the boomless microphone work well in high noise environments (e.g. datacenters with hundreds of servers/fans running)?

I have used it walking the down town street with cars going by. The person i was talking to could not here the cars. I am not sure about higher pitch back ground noise. But personally I have not had a better mic experience. I even have the Sony head phone and they don't work half as good.
