The SSD on this board looks just like the PCI-e SSD used in Apple's 2013 model Macbook Airs. Is the interface the same? If so, does Plextor sell the card without an SSD? I happen to have a spare SSD from a MBA.

Isn't this an x4 card?  The documentation says PCIe 2.0 x2, but it's clearly x4 length (it even has 4 data channels etched into the copper).  I've never seen a x2 slot on a motherboard, so I don't think this will be a problem for anyone, but it seems weird to say x2 if its an x4, right?

It seems to be an X4 by size, but that does not matter.  If a free x16 slot is available, that can be used.

Would it work in a desktop as an OS drive??

The M6E SSD can be used as a bootable driver if you motherboard bio's support UEFI witch will allow you to see it in bio's and select it as your boot drive.
