Hopefully this doesn't sound too stupid but does this come as a single (PCIe) chip? I ask because it's labelled "PCI-Express 3.0 x4". What is the x4 about? If there are four chips that make up the 1TB then that's going to be an expensive MB I need! Also any recommendations on MB for this?

This drive's physical connector is an M.2 slot, which is becoming common on new motherboards.  If you get it with the pci adapter card, you'll need a single pci 3.0 slot that supports 4 lanes (the x4).

Is this NVMe ?

They are new on the market is why they are hard to find still in stock anywhere.  And yes, it is NVMe.  Any of the PCI-e x4 are NVMe.  I just purchased one and my initial reaction is negative.  I am pretty sure it is the way I copied my system to it so I have not left a review yet.  I have a Samsung 950 Pro NVMe as well and it works great but it came with software to transfer your system.
