Side "slots" are aesthetic. Discs load via the front ejectable tray.

I use it with my 2011 Air to rip blu-rays.  All I had to do was plug it in to the USB port and there it was in Finder. As I expected, the bundled software was Windows so I tossed it. I have not tried burning a DVD or CD with it.

Can I use this to play CDs/DVDs with my HP Pavilion dv6 who's internal player has ceased working?

If it has a USB 2 port then it should work, I have it attached to a windows machine that had no DVD Drive and it works fine

This drive can write to CDs and DVDs, but it is read only for Blu-ray discs.  It cannot write to Blu-ray discs.
