This review is from: Intel X25 SSDSAM080G2GC 80GB Internal Solid State Drive
Pros: Good drives with a SATA II specification. Speeds around 200 MBps read 70 MBps write. Bought a bunch of these to speed up old systems and man did they deliver. While not as fast as newer SSDs, I would highly recommend these for older systems that need a speed boost from a solid state boot drive or for simple office machines that only need the basics loaded on them for work.
Cons: These drives did not immediately get picked up by my external "toaster" drive dock which was running on USB 3. Switched to eSATA and they finally showed up after a reboot. Downloaded the Intel SSD Toolbox to check these drives and update their firmware. These drives were several firmware revisions behind the current one which gives them a nice boost to performance. Had to apply the firmware update twice on several of the drives as the first update did not take. Make sure you run the Intel SSD Toolbox as Administrator for updating these drives. Also, out of the four drives one had been heavily written to with the Intel SSD Toolbox showing over 238,000 GB of data written to it with it's drive life registering a very low 25% left. Had to send that one back for replacement. So always check these drives with this application. Also be sure to use the Intel SSD Toolbox to optimize these drives as there are a few tweaks it can apply to the OS to allow them to run faster. And, keep in mind, that after an OS install and updates, expect to only have access to around 40 GBs of space left for programs and applications as these drives are quite small at only 80 GBs.
Other Thoughts: Definitely recommend these drives at this price point. However be sure to double-check them with the Intel SSD Toolbox for their drive life expectancy, firmware revisions/updates, and optimizations. If using on older systems you can also use the Intel SSD Toolbox to trigger TRIM as older OSes don't support it out of the box. I ordered four of these drives and out of those four these were the drive life percentages I received: 98%, 95%, 75%, 25%. That being said, these are most likely certified working pulls from enterprise leftovers and not refurbished, so make sure to check these drives with the Intel SSD Toolbox application for the condition of the drive you've received. It always helps when buying items like this to have Newegg Premier as you can send these back for refund or replacement free of charge and worry free if you do get a dud of a drive.READ FULL REVIEW
Pros: Excellent cable that allows you to convert a standard molex connector to a female SATA connector.
Cons: Cable is not sleeved, but is also kept out of sight in my build so not that big a deal.
Other Thoughts: Helps to eliminate multiple cables coming from the power supply. Good build quality. Does what it's supposed to do.READ FULL REVIEW
This review is from: Transcend 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) TS512GSSD370
Pros: Excellent value! Comes with a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter to mount this drive in a standard HDD 3.5" bay. Software is available at the Transcend website called SSD Scope. Allows you to flawlessly clone your current drive to the new one and automatically extends the partition to take up the rest of the drive. Just make sure your actual data on your old drive fits on the new one. Cloned my 600GB HDD to this 512GB SSD. No issues, was back up and running my computer after 45mins of cloning around 243GBs of data. Fast! My SATA3 controller burned out on my MB but my SATA2 controller can barely keep up with this drive. This thing is fully saturating the SATA2 bus at 270 MBps!!! Would be capable of ~550 MBps on a SATA3 controller.
Cons: There are faster drives out there but this thing is definitely fast enough for even the enthusiast user. Using this in my desktop, but for you laptop guys, this drive does not support DevSleep low power mode so if you put this in a laptop you will see slightly shorter battery life than an SSD that does enable that energy saving feature.
Other Thoughts: This replaced an aging WD Raptor 600GB drive and man did it deliver! ~80 MBps sustained on that old drive while hitting ~268 MBps sustained transfer with it handicapped by a SATA2 controller... wow. This drive is definitely a no brainer best bang for your buck SSD.READ FULL REVIEW
