Love this netbook

Acer Aspire One AOA110-1626 Onyx Black Intel Atom N270(1.60 GHz) 8.9" WSVGA 1GB Memory 16GB SSD Netbook
Acer Aspire One AOA110-1626 Onyx Black Intel Atom N270(1.60 GHz) 8.9" WSVGA 1GB Memory 16GB SSD Netbook

Pros: 1. Lower price as compared to other netbooks from Dell, HP, Asus 2. The bundled Linpus Lite is fast and sufficient for email and other basic uses 3. Ubuntu intrepid Ibex works except for wireless. There are workarounds posted at the ubuntu wiki pages. 4. Installed Skype. Works great including built in mic and webcam.

Cons: 1. Does not come with Skype preinstalled. But one can install it easily using howtos on the web. 2. Installed Ubuntu intrepid Ibex, a bit slow. But I hear the Ubuntu Netboox Remix runs faster as they have removed a lot of the extras that are bundled with the regular Ubuntu OS. 4. Speakers are too puny. But if you use a headset, you are fine.

Overall Review: Hard to upgrade the RAM, SSD if you wanted to. But most users will not end up doing that!

Most Critical Review

Underpowered, Bad bad graphics

MSI Wind Nettop 100 Intel 945GC Mini / Booksize Barebone System
MSI Wind Nettop 100 Intel 945GC Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: 1. Low price 2. Small size 3. Linux runs great on this little nettnop 4. Wireless antenna provided

Cons: 1. Atom 330 does not support frequency scaling. 2. Graphics sucks! I think spending a extra 50 dollars and getting a nettop with Nvidia Ion graphics is worth it. Adobe flash video will just not run on this without stuttering. Don't bother with tyring HD content. 3. Tried using FreeNAS 0.7RC1 on this nettop. Freezes very often. 4. Putting in a CF card is a pain. Requires the entire motherboard to be removed. 5. Runs hot. Hard drives get fried inside. I had to put in a 2.5" hard drive. Had to use a 3.5 to 2.5 bracket. Wished MSI had a 2.5" bay.

Overall Review: I think the Cons outweigh the Pros. I won't complain too much. I knew what I was getting. This system can't be used as a media center system, as it is too underpowered for that use and the graphics sucks. Neither does it do a good job at performing as a NAS, as the hard drives run hot. The little machine runs overheats quickly, but placing it vertical, with the little holes on the bottom helps. (Sucks in cooler air from bottom and the fan pushes hot air out from the top)

Great ITX case that takes full desktop parts

LIAN LI PC-Q11A Silver Aluminum Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case
LIAN LI PC-Q11A Silver Aluminum Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case

Pros: 0. Looks very elegant and professional. 1. Takes full desktop parts. 2. No sharp corners to cut yourself while assembling. 3. I paid 70 + tax + free shipping for this case. Its pretty good value considering the fact that that it looks very good and is polished aluminium. 4. My case came with a USB 3.0 header to USB 2.0 header. This is very useful to me as my Asrock A75m-itx motherboard comes with only usb2.0 header on the motherboard. 5. Takes two 3.5" hard drives and two 2.5" drives. Very good for those who need more storage. 6. Takes a full size Blu-ray or DVD rom. I wish this case did not come with a disc reader slot. Its empty in my case. Wasted space. Could have made this case smaller if no bd rom space.

Cons: 0. Too many air vents. Two on the side pannel that take in air for the 140 mm fan are necessary. But there are two extra vents on the side panel, and one air vent on the top of the case ( to the back corner) and on the back side ( towards the upper corner). This is unnecessary. Just a lot more vents from where dust can enter. 1. Cramped for space. ( Well its a itx, I shouln't complain) 2. Cable management is a pain! 3. I had to remove the stickers on my CX-430 v2 PSU, as I found it hard to push the PSU into the slot. 4. If you ever have to change components or clean inside the case, you will have to remove the PSU.

Overall Review: This is my third itx build but my first with the PC-Q11 case. Overall, I am very happy. The cons are minor. If newegg let me give a 4.5 I would have given a 4.5 stars.

Great PSU

Antec EarthWatts Green EA-380D Green 380W Continuous power ATX12V v2.3 / EPS12V 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible
Antec EarthWatts Green EA-380D Green 380W Continuous power ATX12V v2.3 / EPS12V 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Good PSU. Very quiet. I actually had to look behind the computer to make sure the fan was running. Very quiet!

Cons: None so far. I have had it for little more than a week now!

Overall Review: I wish Antec had a 300W version of the PSU. I don't need a 380 W PSU as the sum total of my CPU + MOBO + HDD + etc + etc sums up to only about 200W. So a 300 or sub 300W PSU with high efficiency.

Great webcam

Logitech C310 HD Webcam, HD 720p/30fps, Widescreen HD Video Calling, HD Light Correction, Noise-Reducing Mic, For Skype, FaceTime, Hangouts, WebEx, PC/Mac/Laptop/Macbook/Tablet - Black
Logitech C310 HD Webcam, HD 720p/30fps, Widescreen HD Video Calling, HD Light Correction, Noise-Reducing Mic, For Skype, FaceTime, Hangouts, WebEx, PC/Mac/Laptop/Macbook/Tablet - Black

Pros: Pros: Works out of the box with Ubuntu Linux. Good video quality on Skype video. Reasonably priced.

Cons: Cons: I would have preferred a stronger gripper. I hooked it to my laptop. It stays but will fall off if I moved the laptop. Not a deal breaker, but a tighter grip to hold it on a laptop would have me giving this a 5/5.

Decent laptop with fast processor and graphics

TOSHIBA Laptop Satellite AMD Turion II M500 3GB Memory 320GB HDD ATI Radeon 4100 15.6" Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit L505D-S5992
TOSHIBA Laptop Satellite AMD Turion II M500 3GB Memory 320GB HDD ATI Radeon 4100 15.6" Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit L505D-S5992

Pros: Pros: 1. Reasonably priced at 500$. 2. Good fast AMD processor. Built on the 45nm process, it has 1MB of L2 cache 3. Has eSATA port, which also doubles up as a USB port. 4. Decent graphics. The least powerful chipset in the Radeon Mobility 4000 series, provides ample graphics for dvd playback and blu-ray etc. But don’t expect it to work wonders if you do a lot of gaming! 5. Toshiba eco feature which lets you switch between settings for power saving and performance setting is nice. But it has its cons too, see below. 6. Runs cool. It runs a little warm, but not very hot! 7. Windows 7! Definitely a better OS than Vista!

Cons: Cons: 1. Loud fan. You can definitely notice the fan noise 2. Modem. Toshiba decided to have a modem for dial up! Cmon Toshiba, who uses dial up these days? Would have been nice if the modem had been substituted with a USB port. 3. Though not a major con, no Bluetooth. Bluetooth would have been nice. 4. Major con: no wireless N. Only wireless b/g. Most laptops in the market at this price point have wireless N. 5. Volume buttons: Its got some sort of a wheel on the front side of the laptop to reduce the volume. Cmon Toshiba, how difficult is it to program a couple of function+ number keys to control the volume? 6. Comes with crapware: The included Norton AV trial would not even let me uninstall the product without first completing the registration. Had to kill the startup process and then uninstall. 7. The built in Toshiba eco feature will not let me modify the settings like time to turn off screen or disable sleep when in that mode etc.

Overall Review: Other thoughts: The reviewer who complained about the hard drive does not provide any facts or reasons for his predicament. Can’t blame Toshiba for the bad drive on his machine. Major con: Bad bad bad linux support! I tried booting Ubuntu 9.10 on this laptop. Would hang while booting up. Looking up at ubuntuforums, turns out acpi=off works. Possibly lack of support for the newer graphic chipset or bad bios support in linux. Cmon ATI (or rather AMD) open up to linux! Overall it’s a decent product, not the most mobile product nor the most powerful beast out there. Its certainly a good value product at 499.99$!!
