my latest update
Pros: This is hopefully the last update I'll share with you about this router. As I said before I needed a dual-band adapter for the 5Ghz band and I received it today. Also as I expected, the dual-band functionality of this router works like it should! So far at this point the router is getting its fifth egg.
Cons: It seems weird that I get five bars of signal strength from the 2.4Ghz frequency and at the same location I only get one bar with the 5Ghz frequency. I bought the D-Link Wireless AC 1200 Dual Band Adapter (DWA-182) with very good reviews. As of now I'm not too worried because it doesn't seem to be dropping the signal and my speed test shows I'm getting a 27mbps download, and 5mbps upload, so as long as it stays that way I can't complain. It's much better than I was getting before on my old, junky equipment.
total ripoff
Pros: wireless, comfortable
Cons: - total garbage - had to return the first pair after a few months - went to return the second pair after another few months but decided to go with another brand - constant screech of a 1990's impact printer outbound to all people on the other end - inbound audio constantly failed - no 5.1 surround sound...........total lie - not digital for PC unless you buy a TOSLINK cable for audio, but then you can't use the microphone, unless you get yet another 3.5mm audio cable to PC, but then you need to buy yet ANOTHER 2.5mm male-to-3.5mm female to connect the headset to the PC, WHICH ISN'T EVEN WIRELESS AT THAT POINT! And even then IT'S NOT 5.1 SURROUND SOUND AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNND the outbound VoIP still screeches This product was just a total pile of overpriced garbage. After I finally cut my losses with the endless troubleshooting and purchases of extra parts I decided to go with another brand, and researched everything. I found other headsets that were way, way better and of much higher quality but were far less expensive. Do you know why? It's because with this unit YOU'RE PAYING FOR THE WIRELESS CAPABILITY! This unit was easily marked up at least a hundred dollars, simply for the fact that it's wireless. Other than that there is NOTHING good about it. I constantly had problems with it (both of them) and wasted so much money returning the first one, and buying extra parts for the second one. Don't buy this. It's absolute trash! I ended up buying a pair of Turtle Beach Ear Force DP11 Dolby Surround Sound Gaming Headset and guess what! It's actually 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound! AND I DON'T NEED TO BUY EXTRA PARTS! The sound is amazing and the microphone isn't super fragile and ready to break internally LIKE BOTH OF THE RAZER HEADSETS I BOUGHT! Oh and I paid $140 less for the Turtle Beach one! I will never buy another Razer product again...
Overall Review: can't do zero or negative eggs
not so very angry customer
Pros: THIS IS AN UPDATE OF "very angry customer" After I trashed this router and warned people not to get it, I tinkered with it some more and realized that it does indeed work. I had to upgrade, downgrade, then upgrade the firmware again and it seems to work just fine now with the hard-wired PC, the 2.4Ghz band, and the WEP security (for the Wii). As for the 5Ghz frequency, I understand now that my N adapter is only 2.4Ghz and cannot see a 5Ghz frequency. I originally said my 5Ghz band did not transmit but I will be ordering a new, dual-band N adapter, that will see the 5Ghz transmission. Hopefully I am right about all this and I will be able to clear my router's bad name that I have given it. Other than the 5Ghz issue, the entire router works perfectly, at least for now! I will give another update and hopefully that last egg when I receive my dual-band adapter.
Cons: This router gave me a headache to get it working but perhaps a bit of that was on my end as a consumer.
Overall Review: I wonder how many of these other negative posts were made in a haste and not corrected...
RUN AWAY FAST!
Pros: um...I guess it looks cool, like it would actually do something...
Cons: Can I give it zero eggs?? My OOBE was terrible. Where do I begin? I'll cut to the chase; it didn't work, period. I have configured many routers over the years and this was a big disappointment. First it would not transmit any wireless signal with the most basic settings. I also could not use WEP on the 2.4GHz frequency band (for the Wii). I updated the firmware and the 2.4GHz band transmitted, but still not the 5Ghz and still no WEP. I went in and reset it to defaults and now nothing works - not even the wired PC. This router would not even do the bare minimum...
Overall Review: This is the worst router I've ever touched. I'm very disappointed in D-Link.
Not what I expected
Pros: low price easy to install blue LED (if you like blue)
Cons: Nowhere in the description or the picture does it say or show that it's blue. I specifically did not want BLUE! All my other LEDs are red -_- However, the biggest problem was that after only a couple of months (or at least that's when I noticed) the fan stopped spinning. The notches to hold the wires in place were terrible and the wires became caught in the fan. Even after I removed them the fan still only works half the time without the need of my finger to get it spinning like an old crop duster...
Overall Review: I have learned to just not buy cheap parts, even if they are simple fans.
