Excellent, high performance router

D-Link DGL-4300 Wireless Gaming Router IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g
D-Link DGL-4300 Wireless Gaming Router IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g

Pros: Excellent, configurable Firmware. Outstanding (really outstanding) Wan-To-LAN thru-put with Firewall on. This is extremely important if you have a really fast Cable or FIOS connection. With many routers you are leaving performance on the table due to limitations here. 10/100 mbit WAN port does not mean 10/100 performance. With this router, it does. Gigabit Switch. Wireless works great. FAST FAST FAST! If you are after high-performance, configurability and features, this is the one.

Cons: Gigabit port does not support Jumbo frames in firmware. Hardware is capable, but DLink has not enabled. Some features require you to work via MAC Address. While this really isn't a problem, you need so survey your network devices and record them. It's not a big deal, and something you probably should do anyway. While not really that difficult for more experienced users, the outright wealth of configurability in this router may be daunting for some users. However, the built-in help is excellent (for a router) and you should be able to figure it all out. Not really a Con, but it is a reality. Don't let it scare you away from this excellent product.

Overall Review: Gaming router? Maybe. But I could care less about that. This is the best SoHo router I've seen short of spending 5 times this much for a Cisco or Zyxel, and those routers don't have near the performance of this one. The Gaming features are really just well implemented, high-end QoS features (with different names), so don't let the 'Gaming' tag of this router deter you. This is NO TOY! This is a high-performance, highly configurable router that will take care of all your SoHo needs easily. The only reason you should not consider this router is if you need inbound VPN connections. Speaking of VPN, outbout VPN pass-thru connections work great and are fast. One thing to keep in mind. If you are using an IPSec based VPN client that supports NAT Traversal (such as Checkpoint SecureClient or SecureRemote), you will actually have to turn OFF the IPSec Pass-Thru option in the Firewall settings. That's a bit counter-intuitive and had me tripped up for a while.

WARNING - FIRMWARE ISSUE!

Seagate BarraCuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Seagate BarraCuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Yet to be seen

Cons: Some drives sent with bad firmware. Label shows ST3500320AS as it should, but firmware shows ST3500820AS which is spec'd at only 8MB of Cache instead of the proper 32MB. CHECK YOUR DRIVE in the device manager! If it shows ST3500820AS, you have an affected drive. If you contact Seagate, they give you a firmware update to install. I did so, but like everyone else while the Model Number now shows correct, drive diagnostic utility shows the Cache at 0kb, or unknown.

Overall Review: Not sure where this is headed yet....

My favorite Printer Now

Canon PIXMA MX850 2436B002 Up to 31 ppm Black Print Speed 9600 x 2400 dpi Color Print Quality Ethernet (RJ-45) / USB InkJet MFC / All-In-One Color Printer
Canon PIXMA MX850 2436B002 Up to 31 ppm Black Print Speed 9600 x 2400 dpi Color Print Quality Ethernet (RJ-45) / USB InkJet MFC / All-In-One Color Printer

Pros: Fast. Economical (as most Canon's are). No worries about dried out print heads. Nice paper handling. Fast feeder. Fast Scanner. Great looking documents. Good Photo's (Though my Pixma ip8500 is better).

Cons: A bit large. Needs to be placed on a SOLID stand or desk. The print head moves so fast, it creates a lot of inertia that will shake the heck out of a sub-standard stand.

Overall Review: I have 4 printers now. The MX850, a Canon Pixma IP8500, a Dell Color Laser 3100CN and a Samsung Laser 2151N. This is now my favorite printer. Fast responding, quick FPO. The Pixma is better at photo's (as it should be considering it's a 8 color printer).

Excellent!

Sennheiser PX100 3.5mm Connector Supra-aural Open Dynamic Stereo Mini Headphone
Sennheiser PX100 3.5mm Connector Supra-aural Open Dynamic Stereo Mini Headphone

Pros: Very comfortable, even for long periods of use. Excellent frequency response. Bass is great.

Cons: Not as efficient as others. Requires a higher volume setting. Some players may tap out before reaching a desired volume level. No issues with my iPods though.

Overall Review: Some find that these not sealing outside noise out is a Con. I actually find it a plus. I do NOT like being sealed from the outside world. I prefer to keep tabs on what's going on around me. Keeps ya from getting hit by a Bus or something :)

SSH Access

QNAP TS-201 2-Bay, RAID 1 Hot Swappable All-in-One NAS
QNAP TS-201 2-Bay, RAID 1 Hot Swappable All-in-One NAS

Pros: Quiet, easy to use once you understand how it works. Mechanical Design is outstanding.

Cons: Transfers are a bit slow IMHO

Overall Review: For the person asking about SSH access. There are two firmware versions available. One with SSH, and owe without.

Pros: Inexpensive. Seems fast. SATA.

Cons: Ever heard a DC3 spin up it's props for take-off? That's what this drive sounds like at full speed. Extremely noisy! Will rattle a steel/aluminum case into submission. Does not read Microsoft Partner DVD's for some odd reason.

Overall Review: I'd pass on this and buy a better drive. The price is nice, but I've started to look at these as Bic Lighters. I won't be heart-broken if they fail and need replacement. I've had several burn failures as well. Lightscribe is cute, but on my next drives will not be a deciding factor. If it's there, fine. If not, fine too. Personally, I'll not buy any more Lite-On's. Too cheap for my tastes.
