Exactly What You Need

LG USB 2.0 External Slim 8X DVD±R Burner USB-Powered Model GP08LU10 LightScribe Support
LG USB 2.0 External Slim 8X DVD±R Burner USB-Powered Model GP08LU10 LightScribe Support

Pros: Works on Lenovo S10 and Samsung NC10 netbooks with just a USB data cable. I.e., no additional power cable, dual-headed USB, or AC/DC converter needed. It does come with an additional USB cable with a power plug end which may improve performance but I did not feel I needed to use it. The drive is fast with just the USB data cable for power and data. There is no downside to this purchase.

Cons: Stupid Cons: it's noisy but so what. it's not all black but that's a matter of preference. I would like a neoprene or other padded travel case but then I wouldn't like a higher price.

Overall Review: Summary: it will do what you need, and well. Don't obsess on the Cons.

Quirky Stability

Intel BOXDP55KG LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel BOXDP55KG LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Excellent performance with I5-760 & 4GB DDR3. W7 32 bit. Silly. but fun, illuminated skull with flashings (HD indicator) on M/B.

Cons: Repeatly lost network adapter on eveyr reboot unitl I reloaded BIOS. The process: 1) rerun Intel Pro Connection driver and NIC adapter would be found an connect. 2) reboot and no recognized NIC again. 3) go into BIOS, change something (like enable/disable clear setup log), and save & exit. Then problem fixed. 4) Updated BIOS to latest as of 1/4/11. No problem. 5) System was down for 2 days. Started up and same problem again. Re-do #1 & #3 above, then OK again on reboot. I am not confident this fix will keep. I suspect this board has a BIOS programming retention problem (same as DP55SB). System is off for this week at my office. If the problem persists I will RMA it.

Overall Review: The BIOS programming retention problem may be pervasive to the current production of Intel boards. A friend's DX58S0 board is having a similar problem with the NIC adapter. His solution was to buy a Rosewill NIC card.

Great Board, minor disappointments.

ASUS TUF Z390-Plus Gaming (Wi-Fi) LGA 1151 (300 Series) Intel Z390 ATX Intel Motherboard
ASUS TUF Z390-Plus Gaming (Wi-Fi) LGA 1151 (300 Series) Intel Z390 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Well-made. Bios auto-config for RAID is a nice touch. Over-current protection on PWN fan connectors.

Cons: I/O shield is cheap embossed tin (no printing on it). Feels like Circa 2000 PC. No pin block for leds and switches. M.2 slot one disables Sata 5/6. M.2 slot two disables Sata 2. Six Sata ports available. Take you pick. Fan 2 connector not documented in manual. It is near Sata 1-4 ports. Writing on board is barely legible.

Overall Review: The cons are minor. It is an excellent board.

Pretty Good but Not Hitting on All Cylinders.

Cooler Master Silencio S600 ATX Mid-Tower with Sound-Dampening Material, Tempered Glass Side Panel, Reversible Front Panel, SD Card Reader, and 2 x 120mm PWM Silencio FP Fans
Cooler Master Silencio S600 ATX Mid-Tower with Sound-Dampening Material, Tempered Glass Side Panel, Reversible Front Panel, SD Card Reader, and 2 x 120mm PWM Silencio FP Fans

Pros: Well made. Roomy in front where drive cage would otherwise be. Nice aesthetics. Holds one 5.25” ODD.

Cons: 3.5” drive cage is immovable. It is also inline with the PSU leaving 2.5” of space between them. This is room enough for the PSU cables but... since there is also no removable mounting plate for the PSU, it has to be tilted out the side to attach cables to it. It would be so much easier if the drive cage was at least removable, and better if reposition-able.

Overall Review: It is an excellent case at a good price point. Glass panel slides in place which is superior to screws. Good cable routing and cooling options. However, the issue with the drive cage and the PSU makes me wonder if the people designing this case ever built a PC.

Still Excellent But...

CORSAIR HX series HX650 650 W ATX12V v2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply
CORSAIR HX series HX650 650 W ATX12V v2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Modular. Quiet. Corsair reputation for quality.

Cons: Doesn't live up to warranty.

Overall Review: The last few years, the quality had slipped. HX650 PSUs that used to run well past 5 years are now dying at 3 years. Most observable on PCs that run 24/7 or 80% of the time. RAID failure is the first symptom. Crash on CD burner use is next. Boot failure is last. Still the best but I now replace them more frequently. 5 year warranty is not meant for 5 years of 24/7 use. Corsair is playing odds that most PCs are not run like this.

Unique Triple Threat

macally G-S350SU3B2 Aluminum 3.5" Silver SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 & 1394b & eSATA SuperSpeed Storage Enclosure

Pros: Unusual find for an external HDD case with USB 3.0, 1394b, & eSATA. Just what I needed although I will probably use the USB 3.0 connection most of the time on my newer machines.

Cons: On/Off button is backlit with a blue LED which blinks subtly during drive access - not bright enough to be plainly discerning. Back panel is simulated aluminum on plastic. Stand could fit tighter - it has some wobbly play, not significant. Premium price for all the ports but then premium number of ports.

Overall Review: Thunderbolt would have been a welcome and needed addition for me.
