Most Favorable Review

fast, cheap, great

MSI Wind PC Intel 945GC Barebone
MSI Wind PC Intel 945GC Barebone

Pros: I bought this with a 2GB stick of RAM and attempted to run Kubuntu 8.10 off an 8BG 133x CF card as the main drive, mounted directly on the MB. This turned out to be fully functional, but fairly slow (perhaps unsurprisingly...) I added an old SATA drive and now it is very fast, but sadly not silent anymore. Still pretty darn quiet. The front card reader is very convenient.

Cons: Setting up the boot order and drives is unnecessarily complicated, but not a big deal (20 seconds instead of 5)

Overall Review: So quick and simple to set up, and so cheap - amazing. Kubuntu runs great, sleep, video, sound, ethernet, etc. "just works" perfectly out of the box.

A lot of fun

FUJIFILM FinePix 2D/3D 10MP Digital Camera - W3
FUJIFILM FinePix 2D/3D 10MP Digital Camera - W3

Pros: The camera is very easy to use. Shoots stereo movies as well as stills. I've been taking stereo photos with DIY electronically coupled film cameras with slide film for about 15 years, and this is so much easier! (And it works better).

Cons: Not really a con, but it's very easy to put a finger on one of the lenses, as they are very near the edge of the camera (but they have to be).

Overall Review: If you do get a smudge on one of the lenses, clean it right away! A haze on one of the lenses ruins the 3d effect. I have a 3d tv (LG) and hooking up the camera with HDMI allows watching the movies without any problems. The tv detects that it is 3d, and everything just works. Resolution on movies is slightly lower than for stills.

Great with ubuntu

Acer Aspire S7-191-6640 11.6" Touchscreen Convertible Ultrabook
Acer Aspire S7-191-6640 11.6" Touchscreen Convertible Ultrabook

Pros: I have not had any problems with the hardware on this system. Windows 8 worked well, and seemed kind of fun but ultimately I need to use it for work so I wiped out Windows and installed Ubuntu linux. Battery life is about 3 hours without the external battery, more than twice that with the attached battery. Screen is beautiful. Touchscreen is very responsive. Body seems very rigid and strong (aluminum). The keys are backlit which is nice for working in a darkened room. I did not have any of the issues with wireless disconnects that another reviewer mentioned. Touchscreen under Ubuntu Unity has all gestures recognized (3-finger window move + resize, 4-finger Unity menu open)

Cons: I wish the battery life were longer, but it is a core i5 and it's driving a big display. If Windows 8 were on a separate partition instead of spanning a Raid 0 array, I wouldn't have had to wipe it to put on my work OS. It would have been fun to play with more.

Overall Review: In order to have working bluetooth, I had to install the daily build of Ubuntu 13.04. Make sure you follow the directions for installing with UEFI, if you want to reinstall Windows some day for dual boot (at your own expense, unfortunately.)

ARCTIC COOLING Accelero S1 Rev.2 VGA Cooler
ARCTIC COOLING Accelero S1 Rev.2 VGA Cooler

Pros: Has clear directions, and seems to work as advertised. Temperature on Nvidia 9600GT went from 51C with stock heatsink + noisy fan to 50C with this fanless option.

Cons: It's big, but I knew that before I bought it. Fits just fine after moving a few SATA cables around.

Overall Review: Silence is a beautiful thing.

Up and fast for 3 weeks

ADATA S599 AS599S-64GM-C 2.5" 64GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
ADATA S599 AS599S-64GM-C 2.5" 64GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Small, light, fast - if you read the specs you know the Pros. Runs my Ubuntu 10.10 machine, and it's fantastic. Super speedy and never a single crash or problem, so far.

Cons: Upgrading the firmware from a non-Windows machine was tricky. Ended up downloading a Win7 rescue image (free) and booting into that, then running the firmware upgrade from a Command Prompt in that environment. As others have mentioned, put your SATA controller into AHCI mode in BIOS before starting.

Overall Review: Clean install of Ubuntu 64-bit 10.10, so none of the problems some people have when imaging an old drive onto this. Total power draw averages 45-50 Watts with this setup: AMD 5050e, ADATA S599, ECS GF8200A Motherboard w/ onboard video, G-Skill F2-6400CL5D 2x2GB RAM, Cooler Master Silent Pro M600 Modular 600W ATX PSU

Good workhorse headset

PLANTRONICS Over the Ear Bluetooth Headset Bulk (Voyager 520)
PLANTRONICS Over the Ear Bluetooth Headset Bulk (Voyager 520)

Pros: Good sound quality, comfortable. The earpiece fits snugly into the ear and blocks external noise. Automatically pairs consistently whenever near my phone - which was a problem on previous earpieces which would need "reboot" if far from phone for a while.

Cons: It can be hard to quickly insert this in your ear - have to wiggle for a second or two until the nub finds ear canal. Maybe it's just me. Once seated, it's great. Highest volume still can't be called loud, which in very noisy surroundings is a con.
