Lenovo Laptop IdeaPad Intel Pentium T2390 3GB Memory 160GB HDD Intel GMA X3100 15.4" Windows Vista Home Premium Y510-3131U
Lenovo Laptop IdeaPad Intel Pentium T2390 3GB Memory 160GB HDD Intel GMA X3100 15.4" Windows Vista Home Premium Y510-3131U

Pros: Recieved the laptop today. Installed battery, booted it up, and it worked just fine. Nothing special; video card only gets a 3.1 in vista, although other components score higher. I like using veriface; its fun, although sometimes it doesn't recognize me when I'm in a different position relative to the laptop. For instance, I took the initial photos with the laptop in my lap, and so it doesn't recognize me when I have the laptop on a table. Maybe that's just because I have glasses on that I didn't take off (like I was supposed to), but whatever.

Cons: The CD drive!! When I got it, it "worked". I installed a few things, but it made REALLY loud sounds with REALLY bad vibration. When I tried playing a DVD Video in it, it was much quieter, but still not as quiet as it should be. So I called Lenovo support, and they told me to reseat the drive. After this, Windows no longer detected it :(. In any case, they're shipping me a new one! The CD drive is Optiarec, which doesn't seem to have the best track record... Also, like the IBM Thinkpad, they don't use a standard SATA or IDE interface for their CD drive, which means they have a monopoly over any replacement drives you buy. I assume all the replacements are also optiarec drives....

Overall Review: I owned a thinkpad prior to this, and I must say that I'm dismayed that they took out the little red mouse button thing. Oh, and the support guy was trying very hard to sell me a 1yr accidental warranty for $50. Overall, I'd have to say I'm happy with this purchase, but I'm still annoyed about the CD drive.

Most Critical Review

Failure

MSI 880GMA-E45 AM3 AMD 880G SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
MSI 880GMA-E45 AM3 AMD 880G SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: It worked well for a good while. Never tried playing with the OC switches or whatnot, so I can't comment on those... Also, tech support was somewhat knowledgeable. Pretty rational, too.

Cons: Where do I start... Well, this is the third motherboard I've bought. I'd never had any failures, and thought that those were the stuff of lore. Apparently not. Also, when they fail, I guess they fail spectacularly. I went home one night, got back in the morning, and the computer wouldn't turn on. Every other computer was fine... how odd! So then, I take it home, test it out a bit. Seems like the motherboard is sapping all of the power from the power supply. Like a previous reviewer, I had the issue where nothing would turn on when the 4pin cpu connector was in... sort of. With the original 620W PSU that was in there, nothing happened (however, I've since realized that one is now dead), except when I took the 4pin connector out, when the fans would turn on. I tried a 350W PSU, same story. Then, I tried a 550W. Without the 4pin, the fans lit up and whatnot. However, when I put the 4pin in there...well, the fan LEDs lit up...weakly... but none of them started (continued...)

Overall Review: (from above) spinning. And then it smelled like something was burning. So, I've come to the conclusion (as did the MSI rep I spoke to) that the motherboard is drawing in an insane amount of power. I assume the firmware let this happen due to the "overclocking" potential built in. But perhaps not. But, end of the story, my $100 motherboard has ended up ruining my power supply ($100) and graphics card ($200). Haven't even tested the proc yet, but, seeing as it's the 4pin connector that's drawing power like mad, I'm gonna guess that the CPU is dead too ($200). So, essentially, this motherboard has cost me $600? Thanks, MSI... Oh, and one of the reps I spoke to agreed with me in the following: If you don't want your house to burn down, you shouldn't buy MSI. (Or rather, after making the analogy to "if you don't want to get fat, don't eat McDonalds," he agreed that the logic extended to the above). So, please, do yourself a favor and do NOT buy MSI components.

perfect earbuds

SONY Silver MDRED12LP/SLV 3.5mm Connector Canal Bud Style Earphones(Silver)
SONY Silver MDRED12LP/SLV 3.5mm Connector Canal Bud Style Earphones(Silver)

Pros: I've had these earbuds for about 2 years now, and I really love them. I've always hated canal earbuds since I find them really uncomfortable, and proper headphones with the band are far too bulky to carry around. These earbuds are great because they're comfortable to wear, but they also don't slip out as easily (I imagine because of the part which slightly protrudes into your ear). They also sound better than many of the cheap earbuds I've seen, although I am by no means an audiophile.

Cons: After about 1 - 1.5 years after moderate-heavy use (I carried it around with me in my pocket/bag regularly), the 3.5mm connector started acting up, requiring that it be put in a specific orientation to receive both channels.

Overall Review: I've been looking for these in physical stores... for some reason, the possibility of it being on newegg slipped my mind. Ordering another pair asap!

Good router!

TP-LINK TL-WR541G IEEE 802.11b/g eXtended Range Wireless G Router up to 54Mbps/ 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Port x4
TP-LINK TL-WR541G IEEE 802.11b/g eXtended Range Wireless G Router up to 54Mbps/ 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Port x4

Pros: Been chugging along steadily for 1 year and 10 months! In my opinion, I've had no issues with the router specifically. But...

Cons: Some geniuses decided that we should only be restricted to ISM frequency bands, and as a result, my phone, microwave, and router are all on the 2.4 ghz band. So, whenever our landline gets a phone call... byebye internet. So, buy a 5.8 ghz phone. Or ditch the landline.

Overall Review: sometimes when I transfer a lot of data, I have to reset my system for me to get internet access. I'm not sure if this is the router or my modem or comcast or what, but thought I'd mention it. This rarely happens (ie, maybe once every couple months). I'm inclined to think it's a comcast/router issue, due to the fact that my network appears to be okay, but there is no internet access.

Bad Newegg!

Western Digital Black WD7501AALS 750GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital Black WD7501AALS 750GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I got one of these forever ago to supplement a 500 GB caviar black. It works well. It's probably fast, too (I haven't benchmarked it or anything...)

Cons: After about 3 months, it died. I had (to pay) to ship back to WD, but they replaced it pretty quickly. Got a new one that's been working fine ever since (so, for about 1.5 years now)

Overall Review: I kind of expected/realized that there was a possibility that it would fail after reading reviews, and I was right. So, luckily I was mostly using this to backup stuff. I really haven't been happy with the way Newegg packages OEM hard drives - with 1 measly layer of bubble wrap. I hope they've changed it since I last ordered a HDD from them...

Great RAM (I think?)

G.SKILL 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Laptop Memory Model F2-5300CL5S-2GBSK
G.SKILL 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Laptop Memory Model F2-5300CL5S-2GBSK

Pros: I installed this on a friend's (mother's) computer, since she was having issues with everything being slow and having 512 MB. Everything is a lot better now. It was a Toshiba satellite of some sort.

Cons: I haven't heard anything bad about this, so I assume it works properly.
