Great Motherboard

ASUS P9X79 DELUXE LGA 2011 Intel X79 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
ASUS P9X79 DELUXE LGA 2011 Intel X79 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

Pros: This motherboard works as advertised. Every feature that I've tried has worked so far (two months and counting).

Cons: This board easily has way more features than I know how to take advantage of at this point. Maybe later I'll tinker with more of the features. While the User's Manual did a pretty good job covering most of the features, for me there was two places where the manual could have done a slightly better job 1. Setting the Memory Frequency/Speed & Auto Tuning 2. SSD installation My goal for this build was to get fast componets without over clocking. So I picked memory that was on the QVL. G.Skill DDR3-1866 32GB. While fast, this memory is no where near the high end for this board. It was to confusing to get this memory to work, which if finally did. Thank goodness for MemOK & Clear CMOS buttons. There is no indication when the board is still dooing auto tuning or not. The other problem was installing the OCZ Vertex 4 SSD. I tried eveything including secure-erase of the SSD. Finally hit the "Hot Plug" button and everything worked. Why should that need to be on? Continued...

Overall Review: After Windows 7 Ultimate was finally installed I turned off the Hot Plug and everything continued to work. I didn't remove any eggs because the problems I had could have easily been operator error or lack of experience. So far no glitches or hiccups, everything appears to solid as a rock.

Living on Past Reputation

Adaptec RAID 1430SA 2241000-R SATAII PCI Express x4, 4 ports Controller Card, Single
Adaptec RAID 1430SA 2241000-R SATAII PCI Express x4, 4 ports Controller Card, Single

Pros: The 1430SA replaces the great 1420SA at the $100.00 price point for those have the newer PCIe 2 motherboard connectors. I expect the 1430SA will be the same workman like SATA RAID controller. That's the best I can say at this point.

Cons: After owning this controller for 3 days, I have been unable to get it installed into a Windows 2008 R2 server. I have done these kind of installations many ten's of times. After researching the problem, I find out it has been documented (over a year) to be a problem installing this controller into Windows 64-bit OS's. No work around has been given either by Adaptec or Microsoft. BTW, this problem is for both server & desktop 64-bit OS's depending on the type of distribution DVD...so BEWARE!

Overall Review: Frankly, I could care less if this is an Adaptec problem or a Microsoft problem it needs to be addressed. I am a big fan of both Adaptec & Microsoft; and have voted with my wallet. But this has taught me to not buy on past reputation. I will be a more informed buyer in the future. I will give this another day or so looking for a solution on the NET (stubborn & hate to return stuff). Then I'll see if Newegg will give me an RMA. I have bought many, many products from Newegg and their service has been absolutely stellar; even with a couple of returns. Great, Great JOB NEWEGG!

The DS1513+ is a SNAP

Synology DS1513+ Network Storage
Synology DS1513+ Network Storage

Pros: I have only very good things to say about this unit. The packing was good, installing the 5 drives was very simple. Even getting the unit up and working was actually easier than I expected base on what others have said. This box does way more than I'm using it for. There are plenty of apps available beyond what I using.

Cons: Could be less expensive is the only negative thing I can say

Overall Review: I now have room for backups for my PCs & Servers. I also have over 1K movies, many thousands of songs, plus files that would be grief to lose and it's saved with fault tolerance. YES. Currently I'm using 3 WD 3TB RED drives and 2 WD 4TB drives. I've only used about 23% of capacity. I guess the 3TB drives could be swapped with 4TB drives at some point but no need for a long while. This box comes with a great OS for managing the NAS and some cool apps. Give it your email and it will send notifications in case something happens, I tested it and it works. If you're on the fence and it's in your budget, do it.

Basic NAS Hard Drive

WD Red Plus 3TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s, CMR, 64MB Cache, 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: Probably the best bang for the buck at this time, at least until the price drops on the 4TB drives. I ordered 3 and all 3 are up and working with no issues

Cons: None so far

Overall Review: Currently using 3 of these 3TB RED drive with 2 WD 4TB drives in my recently purchased Synology DS1513+ NAS. All drives are working great. The DS1513 is about 16 feet away from my desk/workstation and I can't hear the drives so that good.

Greate Video Card

DIAMOND Radeon HD 7970 3GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card 7970PE53G
DIAMOND Radeon HD 7970 3GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card 7970PE53G

Pros: Greate card, easy install. This puppy is big, but it fits easily in the Corsair 600T (black) chassis. Downloaded the latest AMD drivers and not a single problem. It just works with Windows 7 Ultimate. For the Windows Experience Index I'm getting 7.9 for Graphics, and 7.9 for Gaming Graphics. Hard to ask for more than that, except maybe a lower cost. At this point so long as it continues to work and preform as it has then the cost is justified. I've had this card since Aug 2012 Sometimes you get what you pay for.

Cons: The only con in this whole thing is waiting for the rebate. I normally purchase equipment without regard for the rebate. If the out-the-door price is not right then I don't get it. Normally I give the rebates to my wife and let her deal with them as was this case. The rebate did come as advertised it just takes Diamond a long time. Corsair's rebate was here in 2 weeks.

Overall Review: I would buy this card again

A Great, Big, Cooler

Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 140mm and 120mm SSO CPU Cooler
Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 140mm and 120mm SSO CPU Cooler

Pros: I bought this cooler for a build that includes Intel i7-3930K, G.Skill 32GB, Corsair 600T Black Mesh case, Diamond MM HD 7970. Did I say this cooler is big? After installation everything worked, temps were 32-35C, with only one problem, but no fault of the cooler, everything was very snug.

Cons: No complaints. The word is "measure twice, cut once". Something I should have done.

Overall Review: There was about a 1/4 inch between the cooler fins and the back of the video card. Given the performance, there is no way I would consider taking any eggs from this product. While I did eventually replace this cooler in this build for a Corsair H80 Liquid cooler, is was NOT for better performance. It was just the size for this case. I'm not sending the product back. I'm keeping it for install in a full tower server. This cooler works great, it's NOT loud, but it does require a full size case to give it justice. Great cooler.
