Very good value for the price
Pros: Relatively hi-res display: all budget laptops seem to have 1280x800, but this one has 1440x900, which helps a lot for development work. Also, its website has good drivers for Win2k3, which I use for development. Its video chip may be anemic, but even when reducing the aperture to 32MB it does a good job at driving dual displays (the built in one and a 1600x1200 external one). In Balanced power mode when not doing CPU intensive tasks, it is pretty quiet, the fan is only on (audibly) about 15% of the time.
Cons: Not sure why, but when I put a 667MHz 1 GB stick which works fine in another laptop, it only recognized 512MB. Technical support says that the laptop only supports 533MHz RAM, but I don't buy that because a 512 MB 667MHz stick is fully recognized. Anyway, I don't really need 2 GB, so I will leave it at 1.5GB for now. No PC card slot, but at least that makes it thinner and lighter. One note about RAM upgrades: there is a hidden screw under the warranty sticker, and you need to call technical support to let them know that you are adding RAM so that they keep the warranty valid
Overall Review: For this price you can't expect a high-end machine, and I haven't run into issues so far (aside from the minor annoyance with the RAM upgrade). The mono speaker is loud enough for me, and I haven't seen any wireless issues in either win2k3 or Vista (after Windows update updated the drivers). But for $xxx, I can't complain.
DOA
Pros: none, was DOA (Dead on arrival)
Cons: DOA--the hard disk appears to be loose in the enclosure (it slides when tilted, but didn't open it up in order to not void the warranty). Turning it on makes spin-up noises every 2 seconds. The packaging was not damaged, so it was not a shipping error, just shoddy manufacturing
7 months later
Pros: No blue screens, very good image at 3840x2160@30Hz for programming or design work. No blue screens ever.
Cons: Full screen video (such as netflix) at highest resolution shows shearing; for a smoother experience, use standard HD (1920x1080). My main use is for programming, so I don't mind the horizontal shearing. I'd rather have a quiet, low energy consuming and inexpensive card, so I still give it 5 stars
Overall Review: Sometimes when the monitor power is off, the computer doesn't detect it being turned on, so it sends no signal. The workaround for that is to put the computer to suspend/resume the desktop. It may be the computer's fault, so not taking any stars off from the review
Works great both in Win7 and Win8
Pros: Works great both in Win7 and Win8 at 4k resolution over HDMI port. I love it that it is fanless-silent and using relatively little power
Cons: I am using it now in a new desktop. It worked somewhat on an 8 year old destkop that only had PCI Express v1, but on that desktop it bluescreened a couple times. It probably was not realistic to use it on an 8 year old desktop, but I thought I would give it a shot.
Very good value for a budget TV
Pros: - downscales 1080 line channels nicely (to 720 lines) - closed captioning's font, size, and color can be customized, which is a very good thing for people with imperfect vision - built-in media player, can do photo slide show while playing mp3 files in the background off a USB drive; it also allows zoom and pan with the photos
Cons: - media player can get confused in folders with 1000 files, got the TV to reboot, and even lose its settings (reverts to factory settings) - only has 720 lines, so from upclose you can see the lines, but from 5 feet or more away it looks very good, so not an issue - remote control has small buttons (but they have enough space between them, so one doesn't accidentally press two buttons at once).
Overall Review: None of the cons are biggies, and it is still worth it even at the regular price (I got it during the black Friday sale)
Almost perfect
Pros: Fast, quiet, cool. Adds almost 1 hour to my laptop's batery life. Very good price.
Cons: As others have noted, write speed is only 13k IOPS. Still much better than traditional hard disk. Firmware update requires wiping the disk. Should have thought about it before installing OS and apps. I will just avoid updating the firmware....
Overall Review: As others wrote, best to install Windows 7 or another OS with built-in TRIM support. Have only tested it on Win7, and it flies (boot time 11 seconds; installing VS 2010, 8 minutes). 64 GB should be enough for most people, except those working with large videos. For those (and who don't have room for 2 drives) consider instead the Seagate Momentus XT ST95005620AS 500GB 7200 RPM SSD Hybrid Drive
