Great Micro ATX Board
Pros: 1 of 2 choices if you want a Micro ATX board with the Intel X79 chipset and LGA 2011 socket. Went with this board because the reviews were about the same and it was $70.00 less. The board fit perfectly in my stock HP m8020n case. Installation instructions were easy to follow even for me. Installed the CPU (i7-3820), (4) 8 GB of Crucial Ballistix Sport Low Profile memory cards, and a Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus on the board and installed it in the case. My case has a Personal Media Device bay that I thought would need to be tossed to make room for the Coolermaster. After installing the MoBo I decided to reverse the air flow of the case from front to back to back to front- reversing the back fan and the Coolermaster CPU fan. This worked out well and I was able to re-install my TV tuner card in the PCI slot and my old GeForce 260 graphics card in one of the (3) PCI Express slots(I have since ordered a Saphire Radeon HD 7770 PCI-E 3.0 card to replace the old gen 1 card- it will be here on Monday). I added an Intel 330 Series SSD as the boot and kept my (2) Seagate 320 GB HHD in RAID 0 (I originally had these on RAID 1) for data storage. I fired the machine up and installed Windows 7 Professional without any problems. Ran the Windows Experience Rating and had 7.9's for everthing but Grapics which came in at 6.7. I am guessing that will improve on Monday. The AsRock tuning utility works great and I haven't had any problems controlling the fan speeds to keep the system cool- even with the cramped case and all of the stuff I have packed into it. Great Board!!!!
Cons: No cons with the board. Only with Microsoft. When I first installed the hardware and fired it up I found out Windows Home Premium can only use 16 GB's of RAM. So I had to buy Professional to take advatage of the 32 GB's of RAM I purchased. Shame on you Microsoft. Oh well....
Overall Review: This whole upgrade project was the result of a system that was bogging down due to a movie library that was exceeding 1200+ on external HHD's. At some point (say around 900 movies) the Media Center would lock-up when the external HHD's were turned on. My old system consisted of an Intel Q6600 CPU and 4 GB's of Ram and was 5 years old. I also had a USB hub hooked up to the system to handle the overwhelming amount of devices hooked up to the system (wireless Mouse and Keyboard, Webcam, Wireless Computer Remote Control, (3) external HDD's, WiFi Adapter, and Printer). With only (4) USB 2.0 back connectors and (2) USB front connectors the system was maxed out without the hub. This board has (6) USB 2.0 back ports and (2) USB 3.0 back ports. I was able to hook up all of my divices on the back of the computer without the hub. The case also has a built in 15 to 1 card reader built in that I was able to keep plugged in to an internal USB 2.0 header. Also, I was able to plug in my front Firewire port, my front HD audio, my front Video, and my front (2) USB ports. The board was perfect for my needs. A great board for anyone who wants to upgrade their stock board with a really awesome board.
Still Waiting?
Pros: At this stage of the order- I can only say they were inexpensive
Cons: I ordered these 2 weeks ago and all I can find out is that they are still in route- coming from China. Not sure when or if they will ever arrive.
Plug and Play 4K rips
Pros: This product came as advertised- just installed it and was able to rip my 4K movies without any additional steps.
Cons: Not a super quiet drive. You pay for the ability to rip 4K without any added steps. That being said, I bricked a perfectly good Blu-Ray drive because I didn't read the information completely and my drive wasn't the correct gen to redo the firmware.
Overall Review: It works as advertised. That being said, after ripping a few 4K movies and comparing the picture quality to the Blu-Ray versions- I am not blown away by the difference. When comparing DVD quality to Blu-Ray there is a huge difference. Not so much when comparing 4K to Blu-Ray. And the down side- you end up with files twice the size. Not that storage is a deal breaker, I just wanted to be wowed by this incredible difference in quality. The TV I was comparing the picture quality on was a Samsung 65" Q80 series. After I complete my house remodeling I am planning on getting a larger TV- which may lead to a noticeable difference in picture quality. If I think about it I may update this review when this happens. The bottom line is- this product works great and I don't have any regrets in purchasing it.
Darn that Microsoft!
Pros: The Blu-ray player does work. It works just perfectly fine.
Cons: My lack of knowledge, I guess. I would have thought that Windows 7 Media Center or Windows Media Player 12 would have the capability to play Blu-ray disc. Not so. Apparently since Microsoft lost the battle of HD movie disc- they did not want to support playing the competition's format. I had to download some software to play the Blu-ray movies that I picked up at Redbox. It took me three tries to download a player that wasn't chalked full of bloatware! Took me another hour to get rid of the bloatware. Still would like to find a simple player that works with my remote that isn't full of bloatware. Any third party codecs that will work with MCE or WMP?
Overall Review: The Blu-ray disc look extremely sharp on my monitor. I have seen the difference in stores for years, but wasn't sure how it would look on my system. Looks great!
Pros: I needed to upgrade my old front USB ports from 2.0 to 3.0 and so did a friend of mine. I had built both of these machines recently and the Mother Boards didn't have enough 2.0 headers for all of the items I needed to hook up. By installing this part I was able to hook up the built in 2.0 memory card readers and still have the front USB ports. Great price for (2) of these items. Received within 3 days of ordering!
Cons: None
Far Cry Promo Code Doesn't Work
Pros: Still learning how to maximize my screen resolution and size. The Control Panel isn't as easy to navigate as NVidia cards.
Cons: Far Cry Promo Code doesn't work. To be honest, when you follow the instruction to download the game you enter "www.AMD.com/neversettlepromo". Not exactly the same as Far Cry!!!
Overall Review: Someone from Sapphire can contact me to figure this out. I went to AMD website to file a complaint and after filling out a bunch of stuff I was suppose to click on all of the cat pictures. May have worked if you could actually see the whole picture- I could only see the top of the pictures and after 10 trys gave up. Really bad customer service if you ask me.
I had my doubts, but it reads and plays 4K Blu-rays with out any problems
Excellent 4K Blu-ray reader. Worked right out of the box without having to do anything. Several months ago I tried to redo the firmware on a LG blu ray device I had owned for 5 years and bricked it. Afterwards I read you can't do it on the generation I had. Replaced it with a new one, but decided not to risk another drive to the masons. Decided to build a new computer and wanted a 4K reader in it. Wasn't sure if Cloner Alliance was legit, but decided to give it a try. No complaints and I ripped Bohemian Rhapsody in 4K. Not sure I will pursue actively concentrating on 4K movies in the future. Large files and I am not sure the value is worth it. I still need to compare the Blu-ray copy with the 4K copy to see if it makes a big difference. Anyway, if you want 4K ripping ability and don't want to brick a Blu-ray device by redoing the firmware I would suggest you pay the extra bucks and buy it from Cloners Alliance. No hassles and satisfaction guaranteed.
