Solid Board

ASUS TUF B450M-PLUS GAMING AM4 AMD B450 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
ASUS TUF B450M-PLUS GAMING AM4 AMD B450 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Looks nicely constructed, worked.

Cons: There was one glitch. When I updated the BIOS it wouldn't start. When I removed the RAM and restarted with just one stick it came back to life and then I was able to re-add the second stick. I'm charging them an egg for the panic attack and the fact that I'll be wary to update the bios in the future. The glitch cost an egg.

Overall Review: ASUS used to have a detachable block for the Case Connections, which made it easier to get the leads connected.

Decent but flawed

APEX DM-387 Black Steel Micro ATX Media Center / Slim HTPC Computer Case w/ ATX12V TFX 275W Power Supply
APEX DM-387 Black Steel Micro ATX Media Center / Slim HTPC Computer Case w/ ATX12V TFX 275W Power Supply

Pros: This is a nice stylish case, either for a space saving build or for a media rack.

Cons: The cover over the cd/dvd slot is a little awkward and in fact the front has to sit slightly forward on my media rack. As other reviewers noted it was necessary to replace the loud fan that shipped with the case, adding about $7 to the real cost. Finally, I found the tabs for mounting devices below the external bays were hitting the wires from my power connector preventing proper closure of the case. I had to relocate my hard drive into the 3.5 external bay and bend the tabs over. If your motherboard has its power connector along the back edge as mine did, then you will only have one 3.5 bay.

Great Case needs more front ports

Fractal Design Focus G Mini Black MicroATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Fractal Design Focus G Mini Black MicroATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Inexpensive case, nice mounting brackets for the 3.5" bays (you need to use an angle sata connector, no space for a straight one). great ventilation.

Cons: Not enough front ports. 5.25 devices are still screw in.

Overall Review: I was keeping my optical disk in my new build so I needed something with room for it. Generally pleased with the setup, and with the mesh and front fans the ventilation is nice. Given the amount of things that get plugged in these days, 2 ports on the front isn't really enough. Going through my pile to do this build I was tossing viable older cases purely because they only had older usb connectors, or the connectors were visibly worn or oxidized. Which leads me to an observation, the front panel should be standardized and interchangeable. You have a great case, but the port standards evolve, keep the case on your next build, replace the port bay as any other component you're considering for upgrade. On the other hand I guess case manufacturers would rather you bought a new case every build.

Bright Blue LED makes it unsuitable clipped to the monitor

ORICO USB 3.0 HUB, Monitor-Edge and Desk-Edge USB 3.0 4-Port Clip-Type Hub, Extra Power Supply, Space-Saving, Compact USB 3.0 Clamp Hub, Ultra-Portable Travel Hub for Laptop
ORICO USB 3.0 HUB, Monitor-Edge and Desk-Edge USB 3.0 4-Port Clip-Type Hub, Extra Power Supply, Space-Saving, Compact USB 3.0 Clamp Hub, Ultra-Portable Travel Hub for Laptop

Pros: USB hub that clamps onto monitors and other things.

Cons: When I clamped it to my monitor there was a bright blue led pointing straight at me. It's distracting and unpleasant.

Overall Review: I bought this to solve the problem of a usb hub that was continually falling off my desk. I found the blue led shining right in my eyes unpleasant and distracting. I was able to clamp it under my desk. Not as convenient as on the monitor, but it seems to be staying put

Best Processor Value Out There

AMD Athlon 200GE 2-Core, 4-Thread, 3.2 GHz Base, Socket AM4 35W YD200GC6FBBOX Desktop Processor
AMD Athlon 200GE 2-Core, 4-Thread, 3.2 GHz Base, Socket AM4 35W YD200GC6FBBOX Desktop Processor

Pros: These processors have the same cores as current generation Ryzen. Since hyperthreading is on this is half a Ryzen 5 in practice. For a light duty computer that is plenty powerful. For playing media and low power games the onboard video performs fine. Compared to the Ryzen 3 which has 4 non-hyperthreaded cores, for a lot of uses this may match the performance, and at a low power consumption of 35 watts.

Cons: The 3 gpu cores is probably not enough for any serious gaming or media production task.

One good, one bad, bios update didn't work

ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0 AM4 AMD Promontory B450 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0 AM4 AMD Promontory B450 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: I bought the generation model and it worked very satisfactorily and was good value for the money.

Cons: The prior generation model of this board wouldn't update its bios (the bios was recent enough that maybe there wasn't a newer one it just failed instead of saying it was up to date) . This board was a DOA. I'm giving it 2 eggs because I was satisfied enough with the first one to reorder the same model, and then averaging between the two samples = 2.

Overall Review: Over the last 4 months I've updated all of my computers, ASRock boards were consistently the best value. All told I've bought 4 ASRock Boards in that period and had one bad board from them, and replaced the failure with a board from another manufacturer which was more expensive.
