Pros: Cheap, works well with Fedora 11 Linux, and also with Windows.
Cons: None so far.
Has trouble opening (ejecting)
Pros: Does a decent job of burning CDs and DVDs.
Cons: After a few months the tray became reluctant to open. It tries hard, and makes noise, but it doesn't open. Sometimes if you push the button a few times it will open, but lately I have needed to use a paper clip to force it to open.
So so
Pros: Good price for a dual-band router.
Cons: Could not get 300 Mbps rate in the 2.4 GHZ band. Upgraded to the latest stock firmware, and also tried DD-WRT. Same thing. Max is always 144 Mbps. So either I got a lemon, or it's false advertizing.
Overall Review: I like the clean, simple interface of the stock firmware, but I couldn't get it to work reliably, so I switched over to DD-WRT. But I hate the DD-WRT interface--so many advanced settings that are never fully explained. And I'm not sure if there's a way to go back to stock after flashing DD-WRT.
bad refurbished nook
Pros: None
Cons: Much slower than my other Nook Color. Has screen artifacts and random stalls and stutters. Refurbished products are supposed to be as good as new, but this one is still defective.
good business firewall for the price
Pros: Does everything you need: router, firewall, and 3 different kinds of VPN. The SSL VPN is nice because the client software is automatically installed when you login, but it only supports Windows. Tech support replies quickly, and firmware is updated frequently, and the user interface keeps improving. Very solid product.
Cons: You can only have two concurrent SSL VPN users; if you want more, you have to buy an upgrade ($200+). SSL VPN client only supports Windows. The DHCP server does not store the host names in DNS. It does not support UPnP; you need to manually configure port-forwarding.
Overall Review: We wanted a firewall that did everything, especially VPN. But we ended up installing OpenVPN on a Linux server, because it was easy to use and configure, cheap, and supported all the operating systems we needed. But as a firewall and a router, this box has been rock solid for the past 3 years.
Great for off-site backups
Pros: We have two of these that we use for off-site backups. We bring one into the server room, do the backup, and then take it home again.
Cons: Linux is not "officially" supported, so it has to be initially formatted and sized under Windows, then it can be reformatted again (but not resized) under Linux.
Overall Review: I wish it had a handle on it. Then it would be the perfect portable backup solution.
