TF560-A2
Pros: Easy install and has desired features. Clear manual and good board markings. BIOS instructions straightforward and no boot problems. Prompt shipping by Newegg is appreciated.
Cons: None
Overall Review: This board replaced a 520-A2 that failed a BIOS flash. Flash went ok but hung on restart at Verifiying DMI... Before flashing the BIOS comply with manual Extra Information BIOS Update. The AWDFLASH.EXE was provided by BIOSTAR on email request. I now have a formatted floppy with AWDFLASH.bak and a current BIOS file. Update the bak to exe prior to running. I ran the original 520 update from the BIOS and not the utility. Do run the utility to record BIOS information. The BIOS is a newer 8 pin design and BIOS replacement shops currently cannot provide a replacement. Since the chipsets are the same 520 to 560, XP had no issues with booting. I also updated the two chipset drivers without a problem from the BIOSTAR website. For unknown reasons, the boot is significantly faster with the 560 with a more current BIOS than the 520.
Bad to Worse
Pros: Excellent display.
Cons: When it works. Now out for the third replacement (4th monitor) since purchase April 2006. Purchased Express Exchange. Difficult to execute with cust service no's 1 and 2. This time was told no parts available and no units avialble for exchange. Sent it to Viewsonic anyway.
Overall Review: Failures 1 and 2 were heat related. Smell of hot electronics followed in a few days by failure. No 3 failure to initialize. RMA'd 1950 Pro to ASUS, retail box returned. Still won't boot. Tested similar LCD and no boot problems. Extensive on line test ViewSonic tech and same conclusion. What a mess! An expensive one at that.
Needs AM2+/AM3 CPU
Pros: ASUS M478 Plus MB and current BIOS recognized Mushkin on initial boot. Currently running Dual at 400 mhz. CPUZ shows SPD, EPP1 at Mushkin specs meaning the memory can perform as advertised.
Cons: None
Overall Review: To complete a computer upgrade an AM3 CPU will be added in a few months. The current AM2 5600 CPU bus is 200 mhz and limits memory performance to X2 mhz.
Good MB
Pros: Clear instructions, improved boot speed, CPU flexibility. Good MB for my needs.
Cons: MB power on LED pins were not compatable with case PLED plug. An additional + pin place is available but empty. The case plug needs that pin. Results in no PLED light. The CD contains an energy saving app EPU-4 which manages power consumption. It prevented XP shutdown.
Overall Review: The board was installed and XP booted without install of the OS or Apps. See Elder Geek on MB install and additional method at the end. I booted into the BIOS and changed the boot sequence, set date/time, and checked other settings for reasonableness or default or auto. Two problems after boot and subseqent install of drivers. XP was unstable internet. Finally resolved by Norton warning to check CPanel Date/Time. Time.Windows.Com would not access time update. Selected Gov and resolved the unstable problem. Other problem was caused by EPU-4. Good to go after removal of the energy app and update of basic drivers from Asus.
Fast Drive
Pros: 2X faster than the 80G PATA drive it replaced. Rejuvinated the cptr with faster boots and also much quicker accessing internet sites. Excellent upgrade.
Cons: None
Overall Review: I used Acronis True Image Home 2009 to clone the old drive to the WD. Acronis would not execute the clone within Windows. Email Acronis and prompt reply to access Acronis image. Download and created a bootable CD. Selected manual partition of 100G and left balance unallocated for subsequent Acronis or Windows partition. The clone process took 10 min, shutdown, unplug old drive and reboot without a problem. XPHome asked for serial no and that was it. My system doesn't use Raid so those problem to install drivers were not loaded. The MS emulator drivers work fine. I also used the CD Acronis to wipe the 80G drive.
Heads Up
Pros: Purchased to run MS FS X as part of an upgrade. Excellent performance.
Cons: "No DVI-D signal" one month short of a year. Ordered a backup 1650 Pro to cover RMA time with ASUS. Booted first time; uninstalled and installed current ATI Catalyst driver. Failed with same "No DVI-D signal". Subsequently determined that the system would boot Safe mode. Uninstalled ATI driver and Catalyst. Reboot normal sequence as system was using MS generic video driver. Ran several tests both cards ATI drivers with same No DVI-D signal results. Prompt Newegg RMA response for the 1650 Pro. Ordered MSI NVIDIA 8600 for backup during ASUS replacement. Submitted ticket to ATI with problem. No fix response.
Overall Review: My monitor is Viewsonic 2030b 1600 X 1200. My opinion is that the 1950 is operating beyond it's design limit for high resolution monitors. FS X isn't a demanding graphics application as are games. MS driver supports resolution of 1280 X 1024 and is in current use by the 1950 Pro
