Hitachi GST Ultrastar 7K4000 HUS724020ALE640 (0F14685) 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Enterprise Hard Drive Bare Drive
Hitachi GST Ultrastar 7K4000 HUS724020ALE640 (0F14685) 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Enterprise Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Good performance, high-reliability, good price.

Cons: The first two I received were DOA (perhaps unfortunately jarred during shipping). Since I have used this brand for many years without problems I RMA'd and got two more. The replacement drives worked as expected and they have been running non-stop for the last month.

Overall Review: I don't agree with being charged $16.00 to RMA a product that arrived defective. It would be a different story if it was an outright return of something that was not defective.

Not so much

Crucial M500 CT240M500SSD1 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
Crucial M500 CT240M500SSD1 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Price point is good for this technology. Drive speeds are very high and they are completely silent.

Cons: Not terribly reliable. The quality of these seem to be hit-or-miss. Purchased two of these 240G units as a RAID1 array for a system drive on a server. After about 2.5-3 weeks of light to normal use one of the drives died - the system could not even detect it.

Overall Review: The RAID1 saved the day data-wise and I have since rebuilt the array using platter-style drives. Although the other SSD did not have any problems, based on my experience I don't feel like these drives are quite ready for a high-uptime application. Perhaps I will try again on the next server upgrade cycle in a few years. Always a good idea to do frequent backups when trying a new drive in your system.

I love this UPS!

Tripp Lite OMNIVS1500 OMNI VS 1500 VA 940 Watts 8 Outlets Line Interactive Tower UPS
Tripp Lite OMNIVS1500 OMNI VS 1500 VA 940 Watts 8 Outlets Line Interactive Tower UPS

Pros: - Line interactive. It corrects a fair amount of line problems without the need to switch to battery. - High VA capacity, 6 outlets on battery (when needed). - Fast re-charge time (2-4) hours to 90% vs 16 hours on other brands!! - Battery is hot-swappable so you can keep running your mission-critical servers during battery maintenance cycles. - Price is less than many other devices with fewer features and capacities.

Cons: Form factor - it is a bit bulky although this is a very minor drawback given how well it performs. It is worth the headache savings to make room for this UPS.

Overall Review: I live in an area where weather wreaks havoc on our power utility and this has caused me to go through many trial periods with various UPS's. This is by far the best UPS that I have tried and after running two servers on it non-stop for two straight years I have never once had any issues in spite of the frequent distortions and brown-outs from our utility. If you are serious about keeping clean, reliable power going to your equipment then this is the must-have UPS.
