Good, but disappointing

GIGABYTE GA-P55-UD6 LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-P55-UD6 LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: It's a 1156 socket board which means that it can run one of the best CPUs on the market today. Runs well so far. Love the built-in BIOS flasher - no need to create bootable MS-DOS USB sticks anymore.

Cons: The main reason I chose this board over others is the fact that it has 6 memory slots. I assumed that by stuffing them with 2GB sticks I can build myself 12GB system. Well... it turns out that it can take 6 single-sided modules or only 4 double-sided... Anything larger than 1GB in the supported memory list is dual-sided. So the only way to get above 8GB is to get 4x4GB modules that are slow and expensive. I discovered this when reading the user's manual. This should have been plainly stated in the memory compatibility chart.

1080p doesn't work

ONKYO TXSR806 7.1-Channel THX Ultra 2 Plus Certified Black Home Theater Receiver
ONKYO TXSR806 7.1-Channel THX Ultra 2 Plus Certified Black Home Theater Receiver

Pros: Decent sound, easy Audissey setup that detects speakers and their locations

Cons: HDMI video switching is somewhat slow - it takes a while for picture to appear. And the real deal breaker - The 1080p video is atrocious to say the least. When there is 1080p video coming through HDMI input there is massive noise in the dark areas of the picture in a form of blue dots. This makes watching stuff like Star Wars, Battlestar Gallactica and other outer space sci-fi unbearable. Don't assume that my HDMI cables blow - because they don't. Onkyo has unofficially acknowledged the problem and first they promised to put me on notification list while they work on the solution. I downswithed my video sources to output 1080i which works fine and waited for a couple of weeks. Now it's been more than 2 weeks since I took the unit into authorized repair facility and I don't have a definitive answer yet. Meanwhile my nice speakers just collect dust... :( At the price you'd expect better than that. Unfortunately newegg has NO RETURN policy on this unit.

Overall Review: There is plenty of data on the web on this problem. You can start with this forum thread: just google for "onkyo tx-sr806 blue dots 1080p"

Most powerful low profile consumer GPU one can get

GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1650 4GB GDDR6 PCI Express 3.0 x16 Low Profile Ready Graphics Card GV-N1656OC-4GL
GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1650 4GB GDDR6 PCI Express 3.0 x16 Low Profile Ready Graphics Card GV-N1656OC-4GL

Pros: Reasonably priced Low profile Powered by PCIe slot

Cons: none

Overall Review: I'm using these in my Plex server and NVR to transcode video streams. One such card can transcode 4k HEVC HDR10 stream into h264 and decode 8 1440p camera streams at the same time.

Great features, terrible fan noise

ASUS ROG Zenith II Extreme Alpha TRX40 Gaming AMD 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper sTRX4 EATX Motherboard with 16 Infineon Power Stages, PCIe 4.0, Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), 10Gbps Ethernet, 5 x M.2, 8 x SATA, USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 and Aura Sync RGB
ASUS ROG Zenith II Extreme Alpha TRX40 Gaming AMD 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper sTRX4 EATX Motherboard with 16 Infineon Power Stages, PCIe 4.0, Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), 10Gbps Ethernet, 5 x M.2, 8 x SATA, USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 and Aura Sync RGB

Pros: * Great TR motherboard with all that one can want in terms of connectivity * NVMe drives via DIMM adapter which is easily removable are great. * 10 GbE port * OLED display with diagnostics

Cons: * Horrible chipset fan noise. With 850 motherboard, I expected much better. Once CPU is under full load, chipset fan spins up to full speed as well and pretty much negates all expensive low noise Noctua cooling everywhere else.

Overall Review: Be aware of chipset fan noise problem. Also be aware that using some NVMe slots turns off some SATA ports or knocks one of the PCIe slots down to PCIe x4

One of the few PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives available now

SABRENT 1TB Rocket Q4 NVMe PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280 Internal SSD Maximum Performance Solid State Drive R/W 4700/1800 MB/s (SB-RKTQ4-1TB)

Pros: PCIe 4.0

Cons: Probably not as fast as upcoming Samsung drives will be

Overall Review: Works well so far.

Nice clean design.
