my first external hard drive

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 500GB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable Hard Drive (Silver)
Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 500GB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable Hard Drive (Silver)

Pros: Compact size, slim unit.. Cable is about 15 inches long. I like the shape of the plug, as I can get a good thumb and finger hold on it. Nice LED light on it that shows when it is plugged in and started. Unit is quiet. Quiet is a good thing. Option for many accessory cables for different connectors, such as upgrade to USB 3.0, eSata, HD tv, Firewire.

Cons: If you plug it into a Windows OS with autorun enabled, it will enable the autorun.inf filed stored on the drive, which starts the GoFlex registration and backup software contained on the disk. As a precaution, I never have autorun or autoplay enabled on Windows, as i never like software to automatically run itself. USB end should have come with a protective cap, as this unit is portable, and one would want to protect it when carrying it. Seagate should have thrown one in, as they are cheap.

Overall Review: I first used this on a Linux machine. That way I could see what was on the disk. It contains backup software for both Windows and Mac machines, registration, and an autorun.inf file. So as to avoid malicious anything, I copied the files that are on the disk to a DVD disk, and deleted same files from the GoFlex hard drive. Since I primarily use my GoFlex for storage, and not to continually backup my operating system, I really don't need this software, but saved it in case i want to sell the unit in the future. Seagate's webpage states you do not need to run the software to use the unit. True.

Most Critical Review

No signal when I installed this card

Rosewill RC-103 - 4 + 1 USB 2.0 PCI Adapter (Four External + One Internal Ports)
Rosewill RC-103 - 4 + 1 USB 2.0 PCI Adapter (Four External + One Internal Ports)

Pros: None

Cons: My husband purchased this card for an Asus P2B-D motherboard that has two USB 1 ports, so he wanted to add more, and we had hoped the RC-103 would work. Installed it into PCI slot, stared up machine, and got no signal from monitor. I then removed the audio PCI card and tried that slot, no signal. Tried it in the other three slots, no signal. Removed the Gforce 2 AGP grahphics card, put in a PCI graphics card, inserted the Rosewill into a PCI slot, no signal. Put everything back the way it was, minus the Rosewill card, and the system booted fine. I then tried different settings in the BIOS, like turning off Plug and Play, and trying "which graphics to boot first, AGP/PCI or PCI/AGP" switched these, and still no signal when this card was installed.

Overall Review: This card's PCI profile is not the same slot length as a PCI slot. Ii.e. the key does not match or fill all the space. Maybe this is the problem, as it is not getting a good contact. Or, the voltage is wrong. The boards manual says, " provides four 32-bit PCI slots. Slots support up to 133MBs maximum throughput. This motherboard has BIOS update 1013.

Works in a P2B-D board

IOGEAR PCI to 5 Ports USB2.0 Card Model GIC251U
IOGEAR PCI to 5 Ports USB2.0 Card Model GIC251U

Pros: First tried a Rosewill USB 2.0 5-port PCI adapter, but I got no signal from monitor, no matter what slot I put it in. I decided to buy the IOGEAR model after reading the reviews, plus the price wasn't bad. Tried all exterior ports with a digital camera and an external USB hard drive and each one works.

Cons: I've tried plugging a USB keyboard to it, but on this mainboard BIOS, it says, "no keyboard detected". I've tried setting different things in the BiOS to see if it will recognize the keyboard, suck as PCI/AGP first, instead of vice-versa, but that doesn't do anything. This keyboard does work in the on-board USB 1.1 connector.

Overall Review: Profile of this IOGEAR PCI adapter face fully fits a conventional PCI slot. I mention this because the Rosewill unit was slightly shorter than the PCI slot near the voltage key side. You can view the Newegg pictures to see the difference.

Free flash drive when I recently ordered

ADATA 4GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive T809 4G Demon
ADATA 4GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive T809 4G Demon

Pros: It works as it is supposed to. This item was added free by Newegg when I recently made an order. Holds 4GB, which is a nice large compartment.

Cons: Demonic mascot. I got rid of it as soon as I took it out of its Halloween-motif box. It looks like an anime creature. I burned it with the paper trash. Contains an auto.inf binary file, something like cacaacacaa. I made sure to write zeros over it before using it. ( I have autorun and autoplay disabled on XP)

Overall Review: This is my first flash drive, and it beats having to use a CD read write disk to burn temporary files on.

Verbatim Dual Life Plus DVD+R

Verbatim 4.7GB 8X DVD+R 50 Packs Spindle DataLifePlus Shiny Silver Disc Model 95052
Verbatim 4.7GB 8X DVD+R 50 Packs Spindle DataLifePlus Shiny Silver Disc Model 95052

Pros: I like the surface for marking with a permanent marker. I've used one to burn a video and it worked fine.

Cons: Made in Taiwan Since I reuse the cake boxes, I was disappointed that the medium-sized cake-box, which has three screw in tabs on lid, that two were broken off. I have to be careful to pick the box up with a hand placed underneath as lid is not fully attached.
