Huge Drive For The $$$

Western Digital WD Green WD20EADS 2TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital WD Green WD20EADS 2TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Bought 7 of these to put in a NAS. Changed the TLER with WD's tool, slapped them in the enclosure (thecus n7700) and off it went. I don't know if they're quiet or not, but so far they are getting abused about 18 hours/day with no complaints. I've pulled them from the enclosure to upgrade it and none of them failed, no bad blocks, etc.,. Bought a Samsung 1.5tb at the same time retail and it has already been RMA'd to New Jersey for replacement. Loves me some Western Digital.

Cons: None. Newegg packaged them fine for me, in a slotted tray wrapped in plenty of bubblewrap. All the drives worked out of the box.

Overall Review: I wish WD would release a 2tb enterprise/raptor version for larger arrays.

Good NAS Solution So Far

Thecus N7700 Diskless System Network Storage
Thecus N7700 Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: Provisioned a 10TB NAS in less than 3 days time, for a total of about $3100. Put 7 WD 2tb drives in this box after updating the TLER settings, created the RAID 5, assigned an IP and a share folder, and it was ready to go. Moved 2tb onto this so far and it's been acceptable if not stellar. Has 2 NICs installed so you can load balance or team them, or do whatever. I have them running as 802.3

Cons: On large transfers (~20gb, 500k docs) to the NAS, performance degrades over time to really unacceptable levels (~1mb/sec). Upgraded RAM to 4gb (from stock 1gb) to hopefully improve this performance. Reading from the NAS however isn't a problem, sustained read rates are fine. It could be the WD20EADS drives that are installed. Needed lots of space right away so 10k raptors were out, too small.

Overall Review: For those of us that remember 40mb hard drives and 5.25 floppy disks that held 720k, 10 terrabytes of data sitting in this little enclosure is just phenomenal. Not to mention the price, cost about $300/tb to implement, thats not too shabby.

Nice Easy To Use Camera

OLYMPUS SP-600UZ 12 MP 15X Optical Zoom 28mm Wide Angle Digital Camera
OLYMPUS SP-600UZ 12 MP 15X Optical Zoom 28mm Wide Angle Digital Camera

Pros: Beautiful pictures. Crazy zoom, 15x. Bought it yesterday and have been playing with it in all kinds of conditions - dark/dim room/restaurant, overcast dawn, sunny afternoon, from a moving car. Everything looks great just leaving it on auto. I don't know much about photography so I didn't want to pay $500 for a bottom-rung SLR that I don't know how to use. But this p&s has all kinds of adjustments available. HD movie capability.

Cons: May be kind of a battery hog, haven't decided yet. It still has the batteries that came from the Retail Shop (hint) where I purchased it on *special*, but then they didn't throw in the tripod. Not taking a star though, only gave 4 because I'm not much of a camera guy so don't know enough to give 5 stars.

Overall Review: Was looking at a Canon XS120-IS from MajorComputer seller for the same price, but after reading up it looked like all Canon did was change the body and the model number from the previous version. The Olympus has better zoom, HD movie capability (1 hr or 4gb, whichever comes 1st), and looks cooler.

Perfect for HTPC

SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4350 512MB DDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Low Profile Ready Graphics Card 100264HDMI
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4350 512MB DDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Low Profile Ready Graphics Card 100264HDMI

Pros: Quiet, low-profile, Win7 supported, HDMI out. Took the load off the onboard HD3200. Does exactly what I want it to do without drama. Looks great on my bigscreen.

Cons: none that i found yet

Overall Review: This isn't a gaming card, don't buy it for that purpose

Buy It And Flash It

Linksys WRT54GL 802.11b/g Wireless Broadband Router up to 54 Mbps/ Compatible with Open Source DD-WRT (not pre-load)
Linksys WRT54GL 802.11b/g Wireless Broadband Router up to 54 Mbps/ Compatible with Open Source DD-WRT (not pre-load)

Pros: Flashable to Tomato (what i went with) and dd-wrt. Previous reviewer is correct - DON'T buy this if you aren't going to change the firmware, the broadcom chipset is capable of so much more than Linksys/Cisco give you.

Cons: No gigabit ports? That's about the only thing.

Overall Review: 1 star for no -n and no gigabit. Still a great buy.

Nice Little Board

PC CHIPS A15G (V1.0) AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
PC CHIPS A15G (V1.0) AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: My buddy gave me an old x2 3800+ that he had no use for. I figured I have enough spare parts laying around to build another box, except for a mobo, figured I would build a test box for 2008 Server R2. So I looked for the cheapest AM2 solution on Newegg, found this one. Slapped it together with an 8500gt, 4gb of ddr2 6400, 80gb WD drive (also from newegg for cheap), and put Windows 7 on to test. Little board is running like a champ, crunching a few SETI wu's (2 ap and 1 cuda) to burn it all in. It's not a performance box (thats what the 720be is for) but it's a nice little performer, 'feels' quick and has a higher WE index than my year old laptop. Not bad for a chip that came out in 2005 and a $40 motherboard. Running at 2.1ghz from 1st post, going to shoot for 3ghz or as close as I can get on air. Much, much faster than the Pentium Ds we still have at work. Cores at 44c under full load with 8650 stock hs/fan.

Cons: Don't know any, maybe it will fail in a month, but for so little money it's almost disposable.

Overall Review: Have NOT installed any new games on this box, might pull out Half Life 2 just to see what it's capable of, but that's not why I built it. Going to put 2008 server on it this weekend to play with Sharepoint, sql, wsus, etc.,.

Absolute garbage. I'm going to F*y's next time I order anything.

It should not take 2 + weeks for anything in stock to get delivered. Just terrible, terrible customer service. I think my time with Newegg is done. There are better sellers that care about their customers.
