5 out of 5 eggs Got what I paid for. 08/21/2014

This review is from: EDGE D5240-223953-PE 4GB DDR3 SDRAM Memory Module

Pros: Good price for unbuffered ram, much snappier performance than I expected.

Cons: Lossy?

If that's the right word for it.

Other Thoughts: My motherboard required unbuffered non-ecc ram, which I only learned after talking to a representative of the manufacturer. The documentation made no mention of it.

This ram was the least expensive that was compatible. If you want gaming performance, this probably isn't the stick for you. I use this for a coding workstation and it is more than adequate for my purposes.

ECS NM70-I2 (V1.0) Intel Celeron 1037U 1.80GHz Intel NM70 Mini ITX Motherboard/CPU Combo
  • neweggOwned For: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: Owned this board about five months at the time of writing.

It was purchased to replace a programming production and home server that doubled as a primary desktop and media backend. The specifications on this motherboard are only slightly better than the machine it replaced, but even with the same GPU model, it performs significantly better than the previous machine at a fraction of the cost.

Because one of my biggest concerns was that this board would not be able to match what I was used to, I was surprised and pleased with how much this motherboard out-performs my previous box.

It's been chugging along serving my files, compiling my code, and running my video games with no issues.

I had an excellent tech support experience when I encountered an issue, which was largely my fault.

Cons: I had issues that were caused by a lack of proper documentation of this model and my own ignorance.

It is important to know that this motherboard can only run unbuffered, non-ECC ram. I originally bought server ram for it and, though I suspected at one point that it may be the cause of a failure to boot, I was convinced the documentation would surely inform me if there were ram limitations. This was not the case. At the time there were no ram limitations listed in the details on this page nor on the details or specifications.

Seeking assistance from the company was a breeze, however. It was frustrating as the first response was, "here's an RMA, send it in." Then I discovered from a tech who tested the board I returned the ram limitations.

This needs to be addressed in the included documentation as I wasted time and money, as well as the company's time and money, because of a simple assumption and a lack of communication.

5 out of 5 eggs Quality ram 01/30/2014

This review is from: EDGE D5240-223953-PE 4GB DDR3 SDRAM Memory Module

Pros: Owned these about five months. Ordered them because I needed unbuffered non-ECC ram for a motherboard that required them. A little pricier than I expected, but much snappier than the buffered ram I'm more familiar with. The cost is reflected in the performance, even though I am complaining, I have no right to as the price per GB is commendable.

Cons: The machine that runs this ram seems more likely to drop video frames than the machines that run buffered ram, though I've not enough evidence to pinpoint the cause as being even related to the ram. I do have my suspicions though, as it shares a GPU model with one of my other machines.
