Just ordered my third...

Intel Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X540-T2
Intel Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X540-T2

Pros: Easy installation, fast, cheapest solution for 10G.

Cons: 10G is still too expensive overall and 10G switches are practically unaffordable for home and very small business use. Corporate networking types will look down on you for using copper instead of fiber.

Overall Review: I bought a pair of these to connect a Dell T620 server running VMware ESXi 5.1 to a Thecus TopTower 6850 NAS. Both devices recognized the card without having to install any drivers. The cards are direct-connected via a 25' Cat 6A cable. Throughput can exceed 600MB/sec. Today, I tried setting the ESXi vSwich and port group to an MTU of 9000 and did the same on the NAS. This took literally one minute. Throughput topped 914MB/sec at one point since. That's megaBYTES not megaBITS! Have a third card on order to connect another Thecus NAS to the same server.

My new CrashPlan Server

Intel BOXDN2820FYKH0 Mini / Booksize Barebone System
Intel BOXDN2820FYKH0 Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: Small in size, very low power usage, uses mostly common drivers, inexpensive. Runs Server 2012 R2.

Cons: A bit sluggush, no standard VGA or DVI port, HDMI only. USB 3.0 port on the front. DIMM a bit specialized and not inexpensive. Machine appeared dead at first. Needed to re-seat the DIMM. Machine ships with an early BIOS. Intel recommends an upgrade as a first step (note in the box). I accomplished this by booting into UEFI and flashing from a USB stick. (Mouse required for navigation.)

Overall Review: Seeing this little NUC offered with a discount off its already low price, I decided to buy it a try it as a backup server. I have a CineRAID two-drive USB 3.0 array purchased here some time ago and wanted a very efficient machine to connect it to and run full time as a CrashPlan backup server, moving files to the cloud. I installed Windows Server 2012 R2 on the NUC via USB stick and had no problems. Intel's drivers for Windows 8.1 worked for most of the built-in hardware save for the IR receiver and Bluetooth. I found a driver that worked for IR online but am still looking for a Bluetooth driver. (Neither the IR nor Bluetooth are needed on this server.) The machine is running CrashPlan and backing up to the cloud. It's also receiving backups from friends via CrashPlan. This NUC is no speed demon and I wouldn't want a desktop or laptop that ran like it does, but it's just fine as an out of sight, remotely managed backup server. It has an 8GB DIMM in it and the most I've seen it using is about half of that. That's with CrashPlan set for 4GB of memory usage and managing a 4TB backup data set.
