HTPC 4 me!

ASUS M4A785-M AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
ASUS M4A785-M AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Cheap, small, efficient, fits nicely in mid tower, easy to use. Very attractive if you just want to sit and stare at it or use it as wall art, lol. I love the colors Asus uses. Cool & quiet. Bought this in a combo deal with a AMD 245 athalon II to use as a HTPC. On board graphics is much better than i expected. Using HDMI output gave me a nice looking screen right out of the box and it is pushing a 37 inch Widescreen 720p television. So Happy as all get out so far. GPU-Nos software is easy to use and helps also. I have it on "auto" which bumps it up to 600mhz core speed. Easily overclocked the 245 athalon II processor that came with it also, and it runs very cool 20 degrees celscius at 3.2 versus stock 2.9.

Cons: Not really a con but: Would like to have seen 2 fan header's. Reading the reviews on other peoples troubles with driver installs off the disk, i pre-downloaded all UPDATED sofware & Drivers from Asus before i even got the board, which i always do anyway. Asus needs to get up to speed and improve their download speeds more, although they are better than before. Install of all "current" software went overall decent. Wish they would bring back the Install-All features of cd that finds and installs current software for you.

Overall Review: I do not recommend ever installing software of cd that comes with motherboards unless it is a really recent new release. Companies work hard on improving drivers-sofware and if board has been around awhile, download the current ones! Makes life much easier. There are new bios versions available also.

Western Digital Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Bought it on sale for less than 60 dollars! This is the second one i ordered.

Cons: bought this, because i got burned on a competitors hard drive and their faulty firmware, but am now concerned about this one. see below.

Overall Review: I am a little concerned. The first one i bought a week prior to this one, started acting up and buzzing (armerture inside) and could not access it, and would not show in bios, just after i ordered this one. Not sure what i did to get it to start working again, but almost lost everything that was on it. (think maybe had to take it out and lightly smack it which is not recommended, but had to to get it to work again) Immediately backed it up when it came back to life, but should not have this kinda fear with new drive. Will have to wait and see how long the first one lives, and hope that the second one i gave as a gift in a budget setup never fails.

AMD!

AMD Athlon II X2 245 - Athlon II X2 Regor Dual-Core 2.9 GHz Socket AM3 65W Desktop Processor - ADX245OCGQBOX
AMD Athlon II X2 245 - Athlon II X2 Regor Dual-Core 2.9 GHz Socket AM3 65W Desktop Processor - ADX245OCGQBOX

Pros: Cheap, overclock's easy, energy efficient, fast for a dual core with no L3 cache! Purchased this as a combo deal with the Asus M4a785-M board to use as general use HTPC/internet in my living room. This is the second Athalon II i have bought, 1 (240) for a family member 1 (245) for me, and they are awesome for the money. My gaming rig has a Phenom II 955be combined with a Asus 5850 video card and love it also. I hear so many people preaching about the competitor, but why? Bang for buck lie's here with AMD! You do not need a $300-1,000 processor to get the job done. In fact, AMD has the right idea with infasizing (sp?) fusion, etc. Gonna play games, buy a graphics card like a 5000 series ATI and a triple or a quad core processor.

Cons: will not cook my supper or light a cigarette for me, lol.

Overall Review: Some have complained about the size of the cooler, these people don't know what they are talking about. Running mine at 3.2 and only runs 19-23 celcius!!!! Had it at 3.5 and was only 30 celcius running Prime95! So what is there to complain about? Want more speed and performance? Then buy a Phenom II Quad. Which i do have and it rocks also!

Cooler Master ELITE 335 RC-335-KKN1-GP Black SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Cooler Master ELITE 335 RC-335-KKN1-GP Black SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Wow, Cooler Master did it again with this one. It is not a high end case, but sure has the feel of quality of one considering the price. This is my third case from them. First one was the wave, then the 690 (1st Version), now this one. I have also had a lot of garage sale cheapo's. Looks and finish are better than to be expected for the money. Quality, is of course are worthy of the Cooler Master name. I love the location of the usb/audio jacks on the front. I also really like the front and rear fan placement (although it only comes with rear fan & you have to add the front one), they allow good cross flow cooling. I like this enough to swap cases and use this for my main machine rather than my htpc.

Cons: Wish it had a E-Sata jack in front but not that big a deal. It will handle the high end 12 inch long video cards such as the 58xx series ATI (i have a 5850), but be warned that it will effect your hard drive placement. Only because of the power coming into the end of the card. Not all cards are like this, but keep it in mind. I have had this problem even in the full towers so just pay attention to what your needs are for space on any case! Cable routing is a little finicky, but i am use to the Full size atx towers, so not really a con.

Overall Review: Highly recommed this case to anyone on a budget, you won't be disappointed. If you think you want more out of a case, then spend more. I recently put a computer together for a family member and used a cheaper Gigabyte case. And despite being satisfied with the bang/buck of that particular case, This one blows it out of the water for quality, etc.

Cooler Master Elite Power - 460W Power Supply
Cooler Master Elite Power - 460W Power Supply

Pros: Cheap, and great for a budget builder. I would only recommend a larger power supply if you are going to build a system with a lot of hard drives and with one of the monster video cards you can buy now. Should be adequate for lower powered quads, etc. Easy to install.

Cons: none so far.

Overall Review: Make sure you plug the right connectors in to the cpu power on the motherboard. Manufacturer's differ in this. This one has 2 4-pin, which i like, but cought myself brain farting and trying to use the 8-pin like my other pc has/uses. Won't post or do a thing when you brain fart.

GIGABYTE gz-ph1a3 Black SGCC ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
GIGABYTE gz-ph1a3 Black SGCC ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Good looking, lightweight, inexpensive. I also liked the placement of the usb ports. Bought this for a budge build / gift for family and am well please for what i paid for it. Finish is excellent for this price, having paid big bucks for cases with subpar finish work in the past.

Cons: None really, what more can you ask for the money?

Overall Review: Warning. Make sure you have room! I installed (atx) a Asus M4A785td-v Mother board and it barely fit. In fact had to finagle it in. If you are going to use one of the new monster video cards such as the 5800 series vid cards, look elseware! There is no room in the front for fans and only one on back. I was tight just gettin board in, let alone getting hard drive and a small 3450 ati card in it.
