Don't Count on the Rebate
Pros: If it were not for the rebate, I would have bought the AV product. The AV protection is quite sound, and quickly resolved a HOSTS file compromise that was affecting certain sites I visited.
Cons: Purchased this on 2/6/13... Mailed in rebate a week later. Now nearly 2 months later, my rebate status is still "processing". I'm not impressed. It is difficult to find out why stuff is being blocked, so setting exclusions and filters is frustrating. No drill down capabilities on the report logs. The Kaspersky forums are somewhat helpful, but most often the answers involve defending the software and blaming "something" in your installation.
Overall Review: Don't count on the software prediction of scan time. The "less than one minute remaining" notice on a full scan might be present for an hour... not even close!
Updated Review
Pros: Hey... I have to enter a "pro" to post... Read on...
Cons: Since I can't update my review of 6 weeks ago, I'll add this addendum... Now 3 and one-half months later, my "rebate" is still in Kaspersky's system. I suppose their plan is to tie it to a one-year renewal when my current term expires. #disappointing. Since the original review, I've uninstalled this junk from my primary computer. Too many sites were affected, and there was no clear way of drilling down through this app, to understand why... so white-listing was impossible (for some sites, I had to turn off all protection because KIS does not provide adequate troubleshooting logs). I'm now using Avira Free on that machine, and what a relief it has been,.
Overall Review: I only intended to buy Kaspersky's AV product, but since KIS was advertised as "free" (with a so-called rebate), I got this, figuring I could turn off all the extra junk. KIS is a fine example of why "there's no such thing as a free lunch".
Rebate Woes
Pros: If you think you are getting a deal because of a rebate offer... You patience may (or may not be rewarded). I purchased Kaspersky's Internt Security 2013 here in early February because it was "free" after a $45 rebate. Now over 2 months later, and a month after the rebate submission deadline, my rebate status languishes in perpetual "We have received your rebate and it is being processed". This is quite aggravating, and many postings decry any rebate recovery from Kaspersky. My advice: Buy at the best price you can find before rebate. BTW, if you download the "trial ware" directly from Kaspersky, and decline the "buy now" option, you will be presented with an even better "buy now" option that is pretty good.
Cons: Make a rebate "loan" to Kaspersky, and you may never see repayment.
Overall Review: The AV component of KIS has been quite good. I would expect the same performance with this leaner/cleaner install. Actually, this is the purchase I intended to make, but at the time KIS was "free". I should have waited.
Fast, Quiet, Isecure
Pros: Fast. WOW. Enuff said. HN: Step 1....Update firmware.
Cons: It's not an HDD. You will learn about drive alignment. Unfortunately for most, this will be a self-taught learning experience. And forget about privacy. Full disk encryption is a "no-go". Yes, you can use containers, and encrypt individual files, but partition encryption is weak. Need to erase those nuke plant files? Well, destructive erase is going to be a problem too.
Overall Review: Here's the deal.... this is a darn good drive. I suspect that problems other have have to do with the limited start-up tools provided with the SSD. But keep your top secret stuff squirreled away on an encrypted USB drive. And if you do need encryption, don't buy an SSD.
