Great card but needs better drivers
Pros: Great card. Quality cooler design. Looks great with red/black themed builds. Includes backplate. Relatively quiet compared to other models such as Asus and Powercolor. MSI did a great job with the R9 300 series launch being one the first with available products and matching the red/black Radeon theme perfectly. This one is also the highest clocked feature OC mode with 1100mhz core / 1525mhz memory.
Cons: Driver issues with some DX11 games. Confirmed driver issue with FFXIV Heavensward dx11 client on drivers 15.15 and 15.200. Game hangs or driver stops responding and recovers causing the game to stop working. dx9 client works fine. There is also a problem with installing the drivers on machines that have old catalyst drivers stuck in the registry. For those running into this problem The issue is caused by windows identifying the card as R9 200 series. The card is not compatible with older drivers so it locks out (black screen after login). To fix the issue, boot into safe mode. Put the CD that came with the card in the optical drive. Go to Device Manager -> Display adapters -> R9 200 series. Right-click the R9 Series listed under the display adapters and select 'Update Driver Software'. Choose Browse my computer for driver software and point it to the CD.
Overall Review: The R9 300 series launch was met with mixed reviews. The main issue is not the actual hardware but the accompanying drivers. Almost all the issues are software related, ranging from basic things such as driver installation to more annoying problem such as dx11 games crashing at random.
Great mouse, destructive software
Pros: Beautiful mouse. Excellent design and nice button layout. Works great out of the box.
Cons: The HERA software that is required for creating profiles and changing DPI settings is loaded with bugs and bricks the mouse. After using the software to adjust color and DPI the mouse no longer worked correctly. After applying the changes to the mouse, the DPI buttons either made it so that it only scrolls vertically very fast and horizontally very slow. Pressing the different DPI buttons on the mouse only invert the behavior making the mouse effectively useless. The HERA software erased the default profiles on the mouse and it seems there is no way to restore the mouse to factory default. Also, since the first time opening the HERA sofware, every time I open the HERA software it tells me "The USB serial number is incorrect." This message only applies to this mouse as I also have the HERMES keyboard and it has no problems. It does this everytime the program is loaded or the mouse is unplugged and plugged back in (regardless of USB port the mouse is plugged into).
Overall Review: I had very high hopes for this mouse but the software ruined the experience and caused me to open an RMA with newegg since GAMDIAS doesn't seem to respond to support emails and doesn't have any useful information regarding fixes for these issues. Just goes to show how awesome hardware can ruined by awful software. For those who are thinking of purchasing this mouse make sure to NEVER EVER download and use the HERA software and stick with the default profiles. The default DPI profiles are nice, the 4 side buttons include back, forward browsing buttons and volume up and down. You can also customize the led colors for the scroll wheel. All this without needing the HERA software.
Great Enthusiast graphics card from team Red
Pros: -Less power than Vega 64 -Operates near or above max boost clock on average (1793mhz) -3x DP 1.4 and 1x HDMI 2.0b (preferred display out configuration)
Cons: -Too Loud, 2950rpm is the max on stock fan profile; this is arguably slightly louder than Vega 64 reference which ran at 2400rpm -no dual BIOS switch and no GPU Tach which the AMD reference cards were known for since the R9 Fury and Vega cards
Overall Review: This product is for AMD fans. It delivers on the promise of being competitive with the equally priced competition. I recommend using Wattman to set a custom fan curve to limit the max fan speed to 45% @ 95C. This will cause some mild thermal throttling but can be reduced further by undervolting the card.
Great card for 1440p gaming
Pros: - Blower design exhausts heat out the back of the case making it ideal for smaller cases or crossfire setups. - Radeon logo lights up. Dual bios (default 220w and power saver 200w power limits; respectively) - Great card for 1440p 144hz freesync monitors
Cons: - Loud while gaming, the stock max fan speed is 2400rpm. - Uses a lot of power, generates a lot of waste heat as a result. - Needs 1200w PSU for crossfire setups. Some PSUs trip OCP due to the Vega 64's transient load spikes.
Overall Review: - I really like the GPU tachometer feature that shows GPU load using leds. The color can either be red, blue, or off. I hope AMD continues to carry that over on future reference designs. - The reference board has very good components for the power delivery.
RX Vega 64 is the Red Team Enthusiast GPU of 2017
Pros: -Nice design, GPU Tach returns, Radeon logo lights up red on the side. -Excellent 1440p GPU (60fps or better in practically all DX11 and DX12 games) -Dual Bios with Power Saver, Balanced, Turbo, and Custom Presets available in Wattman
Cons: -Loud, while gaming. 2400rpm while gaming on Balanced Preset (default) -High Power consumption requiring a good power supply though this is most likely going in an enthusiast PC.
Overall Review: -Great upgrade for 1440p Freesync.
One of the best custom cooled RX 480 cards on the market
Pros: -Extremely quiet. MSI managed to get the fan profile right when so many competitors got it wrong. -Excellent VRAM and VRM cooling. -Maintains out of box clock of 1303mhz with no throttling.
Cons: -Wider than a lot of other custom 480 options (Nitro+ and GTR). -No Dual bios (Nitro+, GTR, Red Devil all have this)
Overall Review: At full load, the max fan speed is around 1500rpm (30% fan speed) averaging around 68c. This is definitely the best RX 480 for someone that is looking for that out of box / plug n' play experience. The Gaming X is quiet, fits in practically all mid-tower cases due to not being that long; it's about 1 inch longer than the reference RX 480. For the tinkerer, the MSI gaming app allows for changing the LEDs. The card is also one of the better overclockers and once overclocked to the Nitro+ stock speed, the fans remain quiet and can be left on auto. This is one of the best representations of what a top notch RX 480 should be.
ThinkPad P51 still great business laptop
Nicely configured SKU with all the features that people will use actually use in a business laptop. The only thing about the laptop that could be improved is the color gamut on the 1080p screen. It's only 65% of the sRGB color spectrum. Despite adjusting the colors using Intel color management the Reds still appear to have a slight orange tinge. Other than that everything else about this laptop is excellent.
