Great for price, could be better in a couple areas
Pros: Perfect combo of CPU+GPU. With this setup (i5-8250U and MX150) I can play most games on medium or low settings. Honestly, I was not getting this laptop for gaming but the fact that it is CAPABLE of some light gaming is really impressive at this price point in such a small package. I removed the back panel and found the following: 1. There are 2 (yes, two!) M.2 slots. One is in use, with an Intel SSD 600 Series NVMe solid state drive, and the other is free/open. You can add a 2nd M.2 SSD to this laptop if you want! 2. The power port is replaceable, and is not soldered directly to the motherboard. Meaning if you break the power/charge port you can have it replaced without needing to replace the motherboard or try soldering anything. During heavy CPU use I have seen the i5 processor go up to 3.3GHz in turbo mode, which is very impressive compared to the base clock rate of only 1.6GHz! This is more of an Intel accomplishment rather than an Acer thing, but still worth mentioning. WiFi signal strength was pretty good, and got better signal than my old laptop. Where I was previously getting 4 bars on my old laptop I would get 5 bars (full signal) on this one. Trackpad is decent, nothing special to write home about, definitely better than some of the cheaper laptops than I've seen. Whole unit feels fairly sturdy, the metal top is nice, and the plastic bottom does not feel flimsy. Only gripe i have is the screen bezel sits just a millimeter further back from the edge as the bottom, so it makes it difficult to grab and open. I have to use my fingernail to slide in and open the laptop.
Cons: Screen Bleed! On darker images, or when the screen is black you can clearly see some light bleed on the edges of the screen. Doesn't look pretty. The "Power" button is exactly where the Backspace/Delete key is normally located on most laptop keyboards! Hitting this button can be a real pain when you intended to hit delete instead of POWER. TONS OF BLOATWARE! The very first thing I did was create a Windows 10 bootable USB drive (using the free Microsoft media creation tool) and I wiped and reinstalled Windows 10 on this laptop to get rid of all bloatware and junk. It feels much more responsive and functional without all the junk and I highly recommend doing this. In addition, this allows you to delete the space-wasting OEM disk partitions and use your whole disk.
Overall Review: The included Intel 600 Series SSD achieves a maximum of 722MB/s and an average of 541MB/s read speed according to HD Tune. Pretty good for an OEM disk! The Samsung Evo series can do better however, so I may upgrade to a Samsung 960 EVO NVMe Solid State drive, and move the OEM disk over to that secondary port for storage. We'll See.
Not too bad, expected more
Pros: Battery powered, easy to use, doesn't distort at high volumes, plenty loud. Sound quality is as good as can be expected for the price (20 bucks). Good for listening to background music or anything not requiring very high quality sound. Better than just about all laptop speakers.
Cons: Side firing speakers don't point the audio towards the listener, making the high frequency sounds hard to hear especially if listening to vocal/spoken word. I kept turning the speaker to one side so at least one speaker was facing me so I could hear what people were saying.
Overall Review: I know it's a cheap speaker and I can't expect much... but I was really expecting a little more bass out of these. The tiny little speakers that came with the G4 iMac in 2004 had better bass and overall sound quality than this.
Works well, good price
Pros: Good price (got it on sale) Works well, runs quiet, good performance as expected with a modern 7.2k drive.
Cons: none
Overall Review: Would like to see a longer warranty, but the longer warranty drives tend to be $$$
Does exactly what we need
Pros: Fireproof, waterproof, plug and play, no special drivers, works just like any other external drive. Read write speed just as fast as a desktop sized external drive. Sturdy construction, heavy, and professional looking. Packaging was easy and sensible, didn't have a ridiculous amount of funky cardboard pieces.
Cons: Doesn't make waffles.
Overall Review: Registered the product on IOSafe's website with no issues to activate the 1year data recovery plan. Arrived in perfect condition, boxing and packaging did it's job to protect the unit. Have not yet had to contact customer support, but from the smoothness of registering the product on their website, I imagine their support would be just as good.
Review 2
Pros: Still working flawlessly after 8 months of use. Purchased in December of 2012, and it's still working great today! Has a slot for an mSATA drive, as well as a 2.5" laptop drive. Note* requires a slim 7mm drive, not the standard 9.5mm notebook drive. Still, VERY COOL that such a small laptop will support using 2 hard drives (1xmSATA and 1x2.5" notebook drive)
Cons: Trackpad is not the best quality, works well enough but is sometimes unpredictable. Keyboard keys are not very sensitive and sometimes miss letters as I tpe thm. WiFi chip connects at a maximum of 150Mbps. I bought an intel WiFi chip to upgrade it to support 300Mbps connection speed and got a BIOS error message saying "Incompatible wireless card installed". Apparently the BIOS won't recognize any wifi chip except the model that came with this laptop.
Overall Review: Some people say it's great for light gaming. I disagree. Even on lowest settings it struggles to play most games. Sanctum and Left 4 Dead 2 are the only games I attempted to run, and it was sad. The only game I play on this laptop now is Age of Empires II HD. Very basic games will run fine.
Works Great
Pros: Low-Voltage (1.35v instead of standard 1.5v), translates into a smidgen more battery life.
Cons: None
