Ridata CD-R's
Pros: Packed well
Cons: Discs stick to one another
Overall Review: Unlike the other reviewers, I can say that the 100 pack set of these discs were packaged very well...discs tightly bound by heavy cellophane, then packaged very well in bubble wrap in cardboard box for shipment. So, no loose discs at all. Actually, the opposite of loose discs was true; the discs were so tightly packed that it took hand separation of them individually to loosen the discs from one another. It's possible that during the manufacturing process the disc surfaces were still somewhat sticky when the 100 disc pack was wrapped. I think next time around I'd buy some higher rated discs rather than these.
Poor Performance
Pros: Easy to install.
Cons: Fails to burn perfectly good blank discs, and mechanically it is buggy. Pushing on the loading button produces haphazard results...tray slides in and out repeatedly until button is pushed and held again. When it DOES accept a blank disc it almost invariably fails to burn the selected material properly on the blank disc. This situation occured only about a month after installing the burner. I've tried "uninstalling" the burner and then having Windows re-load the latest driver, and this has not helped a bit. Once the ASUS burner arrives that I just ordered I'm going to install it in place of the Sony, and toss that one in the trash.
Overall Review: Perhaps this is just a fluke "lemon" burner that I received, and all the other reviews that praise it are right. But, I'm done with this burner and am ordering another of a different brand that I know has worked well for years in my present pc.
Quite a good drive
Pros: Excellent DVD and CD Burner. I replaced an old Pioneer DVD-RW drive with this NEC 3550A, purchased from Newegg, and the installation was a snap. Using WIN XP, SP2, the drive was recognized immediately, and I had no need to change the jumpers in back....just popped in the power cable and the IDE cable and that was it. So far it has read and burned every disc I've put in it, and obviously at a much faster speed than the old Pioneer I had, which maxxed out at 2X. So, I'm pleased with the NEC 3550A and can recommend it highly.
Cons: The NEC 3550A has a slightly louder noise when reading or burning at higher speeds. This may be just the way higher speed drives are, as I have no experience with other drives.
Overall Review: A tip of the hat to Newegg as well. Of the various vendors I've used, Newegg consistently delivers quality products, well packed, and with fast shipping.
