Don't Do It
Pros: Price, Promises, features
Cons: Actual performance. Dealing with TomTom customer service is remarkably frustrating. Every communication takes 2 or more days. They will want you to pay shipping to return defective devices, even those that are DOA. ( you can eventually win that fight.) Then they promise expedited shipping and end up sending Ground.
Overall Review: Do you have masochistic tendencies? You'll be right at home with TomTom and their customer support. I'm due to receive my 5th replacement. after 2 failures they.sent the Go 2535, 2 of those failed and they're sending me a Via 1535. The saga started in March 2013, now September and I've had perhaps 1 month of normal use. You have to persist to be treated fairly. There is an option: just avoid TomTom in the first place.
Better than Nothing
Pros: HDMI. Sounds better than the built-in speakers in my Vizio. Tech support from Yamaha was helpful during the tricky install.
Cons: Frequently fails to turn on with my Vizio smart TV. Requires remote “power on”. A bit “boomy” a bit too often. Clear Voice is ineffective. Surround Sound?
Overall Review: It’s cheap, so what should one expect?! I EXPECTED an up grade from my elderly Vizio sound bar. I’m not so sure I got one. I’m particularly disappointed with the “Clear Voice” feature. I was looking for more improvement there, and I can’t hear any difference.
Maybe you ought to keep looking
Pros: Traffic monitor, screen size, free map updates, windshield mount.
Cons: Inconsistent performance, Low volume. Voice recognition is inconsistent.
Overall Review: So, my GPS has developed a new problem. The screen registration is faulty. When I press on a letter/number, a different character appears. This makes navigation dependent on the problematic voice recognition. Want to get frustrated? Try dictating an address into the GPS. I am a professional speaker. My diction is very precise. This does not matter to the voice recognition system in the GPS. Sometimes it works effectively, but all too often, it fails miserably. I called and emailed TomTom support, The CS rep walked me through a reset, which did not correct the typing problem. I was then informed that I will receive a new unit to replace this one, which is still under warranty. I received it in September 2013. I was then informed that I would have to pay for shipping. As it happens, this VIA 1535 was sent to me by TomTom, as a replacement for my 3rd, failed TomTom GPS. They sent me this newer model. After some discussions, they agreed that I shouldn't have to pay to send defective models back to them for replacement/repair. This time around, I was told that I would have to pay to ship yet another defective unit back to them. I asked to escalate the discussion to a supervisor. Today, the supervisor emailed me to say that pre-paid mailers are only given out when the device is a maximum of 6 months old. Obviously, they did not look into the records, where they would have discovered that the thing is, in fact, 6 months old! My last email from them, before it was sent out, indicated I would receive it on or around September 9, 2013. Today, being March 7, 2014, is less than 6 months later. Hopefully, others' experiences will be better than mine, although I truly wonder whether TomTom is capable of reasonable Customer Service.
Don't Do It!
Pros: What it says it can do. Price Screen Size
Cons: What it does.
Overall Review: Let my experience be your guide. This model just isn't ready for prime time. What can I say? "Train Wreck?" "Disaster?" Are you willing to be a guinea pig for TomTom? This is obviously a beta test for tolerance levels. I bought 1, it broke within 2 weeks. They RMA'd it. Sent another. It malfunctioned from day 1. Sent another. Got 2 days use! Read my lips: " Don't Do it!!"
Compatibility Issues
Pros: Great idea, strong signal, potential big bucks saver. Potential to connect multiple devices.
Cons: May not work with your phone. Doesn't support my Motorola Photon. Connects, but no internet access.
Overall Review: Check on their website for compatibility with your device. I called Cradlepoint customer support to see if there was a work-around, but no luck.
