Best Board

ASUS ROG Crosshair V Formula-Z AM3+ AMD 990FX + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Gaming Motherboard with 3-Way SLI/CrossFireX Support and UEFI BIOS
ASUS ROG Crosshair V Formula-Z AM3+ AMD 990FX + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Gaming Motherboard with 3-Way SLI/CrossFireX Support and UEFI BIOS

Pros: This is my second ASUS ROG board, and I love them. I still have my crosshair 4. My processor died because I'd been overclocking for the last few years, and I decided 6 cores wasn't cutting it anymore. These boards have all the features you could ever want. Hell I haven't even explored most of them yet. They have the UEFI bios as well now thats adds a whole lot of new options for your pleasure. The sound card installed on the board is a plus compared to what I'm used to. I plug my surround sound headphones into the optical port and 1080p videos on youtube bring intense sensations of pleasure to my ears. It looks awesome as well. The board lights up as if it was splitting apart to reveal lava. The debug lights have been helpful in experimentations as well. They light up and tell you where in the process the boot is failing (how I knew my cpu died). These mobos are worth the price in the long run. Not only have I had a hard time trying to break one, but the tweaking options are a must for anyone that intends to do any serious gaming or video encoding.

Cons: It's one of the more expensive boards on the market, but as the cliche goes: you get what you pay for. I believe the BIO's needs an update with the new FX cards, I've read about it, and have noticed a slow response time when opening applications. Not going to dock eggs for either. BIOs can be fixed, and the price isn't bad when you consider the quality and that AMD will use the same socket for its next couple of processors.

Overall Review: All that being said, I love ASUS boards. I've bought, and had friends buy them for their rigs, and have never regretted buying one.

Great Cooler

CORSAIR Hydro Series CWCH50 Water Cooler
CORSAIR Hydro Series CWCH50 Water Cooler

Pros: **Make sure to read "Other thoughts" of this review, you'll find it worth your time.** Works great. I can't compare it to other water coolers, since this is my first. No leaks. Radiator is almost the size of a 120mm fan.. But the edges will stand off the fan a bit on the top and bottom. Using a Phenom 2 6core 1090 black edition: stock cooler: overclocked to 3.6ghz = 50C H50 water cooler: overclocked to 3.7ghz = 40C (I'm pulling already warm air from the inside of case through the radiator and passing it out of the case) At idle it runs around the same temp as the stock cooler. Its by far alot less noisy though. Its absolutely silent now, the only thing making noise is the air passing through. During tests I couldn't tell the processor was under full load. The piece mounted to the motherboard is rather small compared to air cooled heatsinks, which is a plus, because it frees up alot of room for fancy RAM, also less weight on the motherboard.

Cons: Pipe's from radiator to processor are a bit sturdy. After some thought I found a way to mount it that I felt was suitable.

Overall Review: This item is listed on Newegg twice. Searching "H50" will turn up a similar looking item priced at around $70 dollars. I ordered both. The item boxes looked exactly the same, however I only opened one so that I could return the other. CWCH50 the other CWCH501. The first never came with mounting brackets, the second does. but under both listings, Newegg ships H501.

Great Case

Antec DF-85 Black Steel / Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case
Antec DF-85 Black Steel / Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: Eight fan mounts. Comes with seven fans. Great airflow even on low, better on high. Not very loud for the amount of air that passes through. Actually creates a draft in my room. All fans have fan controls. Lights not too bright. Roomy case. Plenty of room for cable management. As I found out Full Tower is essentially for Crossfire/SLI. Lots of power cords even with a modular powersupply. Important points for me: -Bottom mounted power supply. (sucks in cold air rather than hot air that rose to the top. Cables also not dangling around, in case of a non modular power supply). -Top of motherboard will be 2-3 inches from the top fans. (room for heatsink+fan, or radiator?). **I got so sick and tired of dismounting front panels in my old cases. Fortunately this case will not require removing the front panel as far as I am aware, ++Coolpoints.

Cons: As mentioned before top drive bay may not be usable. I say may because the cables for the front panel are in the way. Haven't looked into adjusting that. If I really needed all three I would, however I use only one. Front panel is plastic. The plastic seems to be of the less durable kind, as far as the hinges for the fans and drive bays go. (bumping into it/ travelling with it often may be a no-no). Also front needs manual opening. For example, putting a cd into a disk drive would require you to open the plastic latch for that particular drive bay. Not really a con, but if your switching cds often could get lame.

Overall Review: Pros for me outweigh the cons. Really did some research on this case to make sure it was the right one for me. Second computer build, so I knew exactly what it was I needed. Planned to have this case for a while. My first full tower, its pretty big and with all my things pretty heavy. Feels like 50 -75 lbs. Thats with two graphics cards and a solid powersupply.

Good.

ASUS DVD-E818A4/BLK/B/GEN Black 18X IDE DVD-ROM Drive - Bulk
ASUS DVD-E818A4/BLK/B/GEN Black 18X IDE DVD-ROM Drive - Bulk

Pros: Works for what one would expect from a regular CD drive. Was in my price range. Worked on arrival.

Cons: None

Overall Review: For my first self built computer. CD drive was an after thought since I don't use CD drives much anymore, but for the price I figured might as well.

Good Case

Thermaltake V3 Black Edition VL80001W2Z Black SECC / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Thermaltake V3 Black Edition VL80001W2Z Black SECC / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Good case for the price. Bought it on recommendation from a friend. Three people in my dorm own one and they're all happy with the quality.

Cons: Sides are flimsy when unmounted. (Don't sit on them).

Overall Review: Mother board will interfere with top fan mounts. I just moved the fans over a notch. Was a snug fit but no problem. I probably could have sanded edges of fan down a bit to get it to fit normally but would have been more work than it was worth. I have to disagree with some of the posts complaining about how filmsy the case is. Short of taking the panels off and standing on them it's a pretty good case. This was for my first computer I've ever built. Came in good condition. When I was looking for my case some of the things I needed were bottom mounted power supply, little to no plastic, and lots of vents/fan mounts.

No problems thus far.

MSI 890GXM-G65 AM3 AMD 890GX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
MSI 890GXM-G65 AM3 AMD 890GX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Came on time. Excellent Condition. Everything I could hope for. No dead on arrivals, worked the first time I turned it on. I upgraded from a stock computer, that had next to no usb ports, this on the other hand I can't figure out what to do with all the ports.

Cons: In my case the motherboard is towards the top, RAM slots and CPU sink interfere with top vent fans. Wasn't a problem though for my case. I had room to offset them. Didn't come with mounting screws. I don't know if it's normal but if your case doesn't have an extra standard set of screws you might be out of comission till you find some. Also the back panel, labeling the ports, didn't fit my case. Put too much tension on the mb for my taste, so I just left it out.

Overall Review: Bought this motherboard for the first computer I ever built. I had no problems with it so I don't see why anyone else would.
