NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 4-Bay Network Attached Storage Diskless (RN10400)
  • neweggOwned For: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: * Web UI is super friendly.
* Very flexible in security/permission (ACL) setting. It could easily fit a small even medium size company.
* Shell access to its Linux core
* App store. It's not super mature and there are not many options, and some 3rd party apps might totally have bad UI. But I found almost everything I need for a storage appliance. It makes the storage become a light server.
* Few clicks gives you a private cloud file store thru ReadyCLOUD, coupled with continuously back up totally reduced my usage of Google drive.

Cons: * App store is not controlled very well. Hope NETGEAR be able to provide some guides for developing in-house apps.

Other Thoughts: I got the unit (with 2 disks) for review from NETGEAR for free thru a testing program. After initial testing, I felt it's a good fit for home and my small dev studio, so I replace the stocked disks with 4 new WD Red 2TB ones. It looks totally not a bad investment. I move all my media files onto that from my previous file server which is a Mac mini, and sharing became much easier. And the dual network interfaces definitely provides better performance.
