Great Laptop for gaming and photoshop, Bad Customer Service
Pros: I bought this laptop for school at $650 after the instant rebate and promo code offer. It performs well in gaming, so far I've tested Doom and Subnautica and they run really well. The CPU handles image processing really well, too. The laptop has a decent feeling keyboard and a pretty decent screen. The viewing angles can be challenging, but it is a laptop, after all. I liked the performance in gaming but I wanted it to be a bit faster so I upgraded the ram and added a 256gb M.2 SSD. Once I migrated over the OS, it ran like a dream.
Cons: The SSHD that it comes with is absolute garbage and should be a very, very considerable Con when you factor these things into your decision. It's so bad that I thought I had received a DOA laptop because it took SO LONG to boot. After it finally booted, I noticed that the performance was on par with one of those awful "green" drives running at 5400rpm. It's also notably loud. Yes, the hard drive is actually audible. I had forgotten how noisy they were until I was sitting in a quiet room and started hearing the pops and clicks of that dang drive. You basically HAVE to buy an SSD for this computer to really be worth it, which is unfortunate as it adds to the cost. It would have been better if they had just only installed an M.2 SSD that was smaller. Once I migrated my OS to the new drive, it ran faster. I also installed a second stick of 8GB of ram a few days after I bought it. I booted it and realized it was only using up 8gb of ram, even though my bios and CPU-Z were recognizing that both slots were seated and it totaled to 16GB. I tried contacting ASUS support after registering my product and I was essentially ghosted. This is when I began to worry as I know ASUS doesn't have the best record of quality customer service. I sent the email with details explaining my situation and to this day have no received a response. I would hate to think what I would do if it was a more serious issue! The laptop is marketed as upgradable and expandable, but once you open it up you void the warranty. Seems a bit underhanded to encourage customers to perform upgrades that would void the warranty, so I began to worry as a week passed and I still hadn't heard from ASUS. I said to hell with it and began trying to find my own fix, goodness knows I wouldn't get it from them. Eventually, after many attempts to fix the issue with the unused ram, I tried swapping the ram slots and it seemed to work. No thanks to ASUS. The laptop fan control is also pretty unreliable. I turn on turboboost only to have it turn on hours later in the middle of class when the laptop is still cool to the touch. It doesn't work on command and that is really, really frustrating. There is a serious lack of features in terms of ports, I would have hoped there would be at the very least a SD slot, but the features on this unit are really sparse.
Overall Review: All in all, I'm happy with my laptop despite the lack of care or customer service from ASUS after I had just given them ~$700. Shame on you, ASUS.
WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER
Pros: I used this every day before it stopped working for no reason. The sound was great and the bass was nice. Battery lasted a long time and the signal was always very clear.
Cons: After less than one month, the dang thing stopped working. For the last month now I've been trying to get a hold of LG support to begin the warranty process as it's still within that year. Their website is a JOKE. Every time I go there, it says that the live chat is offline, even during the times it claims it's working. The email service option is also completely broken. Whenever you get to the part that asks you to choose your product, it locks up and fails to bring up the thing that allows you to choose. Not only did it stop working, but it's also impossible to redeem my warranty. It's a shame since I used this thing ever day it did work. If I could give 0 stars I would since it only worked for a month and their customer service is non-existent.
Great Powerful GPU
Pros: This card was my first nVidia card I've purchased since the 9800GT. I upgraded from an XFX 270x and the difference is insane. I can play GTAV maxed out at very high frames. This card eats through everything, even Witcher 3 on max. The card is quiet and rarely gets hot.
Cons: None.
Terrible Warranty, Even worst support staff
Pros: The card ran well, but for the price it was underpowered. Struggles on most AAA games but does decently. It's still the same price it was when I purchased it a year ago. I purchased this card along with several other XFX cards which I will be reviewing after my experience with their support staff.
Cons: I have been a HUGE supporter of XFX, and have used their GPU's exclusively since I was in high school. The one thing that has always made me choose XFX over literally any other brand was their warranty. I had heard that their warranty was great and their support staff was usually very helpful. Well, I tried using my warranty for my XFX 6950 I purchased years ago and they told me that I was out of luck without my invoice for the card, which I purchased almost 4 years ago. I registered the card on the XFX site, as I have with a few of my other cards, the day I purchased the card from an electronics store. I told them that since I purchased it at a electronic retail store and not an online retailer I couldn't get a copy of an invoice that old and didn't realize registration wasn't enough. They could see on their site that I registered the card with the correct serial code back in 2011, yet they said that doesn't prove I purchased the card when I did... Despite me explaining it to their support staff, I was accused of trying to scam the company and the support staff who was taking care of my support ticket said I "could have just bought it used and tried to get the warranty". So, I've spent well over $2000 in my lifetime on these cards as through college I worked in my schools IT department and would often replace failing cards on clients computers with XFX cards. It's nice to see that when you actually DO need to use your warranty, you'd better have your original receipt or you'll be accused of being a criminal. Thanks XFX. To top it all off, when I asked to have a member of management included on the support ticket, the person "helping" me told me they couldn't do that, and that I could just call and they would say the same thing, and that he "couldn't make himself more clear". The way I was treated by the support staff was extremely disrespectful and unacceptable.
Overall Review: I feel like a fool for supporting such a terrible company. I'll never again buy an XFX product, and if anyone out there is like me and weighs the warranty policy heavily in your decision making process, I would say skip XFX and go with a different manufacturer.
First nVidia card in years
Pros: I got this card to upgrade my computer from a 270x crossfire. This single card out performs my crossfire configuration. In GTAV I was getting around 28-35fps on all normal @ 1080p. When I swapped this card, I was setting it on almost all max except grass was set to very high instead of ultra and now I'm getting 30-50 fps @ 1080p. My CPU is a FX4100 so it's certainly bottlenecking me. I've played witcher 2, wolfenstien, etc. All of which I got very high frames at maxed out settings.
Cons: Wasn't free. Had a bit of coil whine but EVGA has said thats normal.
Horrible build quality
Pros: Worker as good as my old Gen 1 H50.
Cons: Where do I begin? The screws that came with the unit are too short to be used. I only managed to get a single rotation of threading before it stripped the thread on the radiator. Luckily I had spares which were longer that worked. The fan is made by a cheaper company, so that is another strike for trying to skimp on production costs. Ultimately the thing that made me write this review is that this piece of garbage nearly cost me my cpu. 3 months after purchase and the pump died on me. The hot coolant was just trapped in one tube and couldn't cycle through the radiator. I thought maybe it was the power so I tried using an adapter to power the pump. Nope. Tried using a system fan conector. Nope. Lesson learned. Invest the extra $8 and buy from corsair. Their coolers have yet to let me down in both quality and performance.
