Question 1

It is possible to upgrade the RAM?  If so, what is the max?

It is doubtful value would be added if the ram could be upgraded. From a physical perspective, I do not recall it being removable as I recall everything was soldered on the board (I may remember wrong and it runs 24/7 thus I'm not disassembling it). From a practical perspective, this has a Maxwell 1.6GHz processor and is a specialty device, not an open OS. Thus, the operating system was developed to work with the existing hardware and probably isn't programmed to accept hardware changes. Thus, chances of gaining any value from upgrading ram is doubtful.  Btw, I've been very happy with the performance and features, however I only use it as a backup device for multiple PCs and a FTP.

Question 2

I am looking for something to allow outside users (not in the home the NAS will be installed in) to access pictures securely.  In other words, can the device be set up so users can access it over the Internet, and access a password-protected file with pictures without giving access to the entire content of the NAS?

does it come with any type of hdd???????

Well no thus the "DISKLESS" designation. Check the QNAP site for drive compatibility then choose drives from their approved list. Do not go cheap, use drives marked NAS or Enterprise from WD or Toshiba. NO WD Black, they have reliability issues

Can this work with a usb WiFi dongle?

Yes. This model is compliant with 802.11n wifi.  Check for specifics on which wifi dongle to purchase.
