Very pleased with this

Pros: I am very pleased with this NAS device. He have some older computers in our home, that work find for us. Lack of storage is an issue though. We were also getting concerned about losing pictures and important files. The external USB drive was not very convenient and so we weren't using it often enough. The TS-212-E is just what we needed. I installed a pair of 3 TB drives, and mirrored them. It was very simple to setup and we were using it shortly after after it as plugged in. Within two days we had all our important files and pictures moved to it. I setup email alerts, so if anything goes wrong we will get an email.

Cons: It's not really a con that this device does not have much memory and a lower end CPU, but it is worth considering. I wanted cheap and big. The QNAP software has a lot of features. Some of the features and applications are pretty cool. I don't plan on enabling any of them. If you want to use some of the cool features and/or applications, I would recommend that you buy a device with more memory and a faster CPU.

Other Thoughts: Before you tell me that I should not rely on this device alone to protect our pictures, we are backing them up periodically to an external USB drive and keeping it in a fireproof safe.

Prelim Feedback - Good So Far

Pros: Easy drive installation, using QFinder app initial setup was easy, basic functionality is pretty nice.

I am running a 4 TB RAID 1 array with better *consistent* throughput that any USB 3.0 drive OR a 2TB RAID 5 array installed in my PC.

In the cons section I discuss some issues with video streaming/transcoding and the ability of this unit to multi-task but I was impressed with the iTunes sharing for my music collection. I copied my music (200 GB), set up Media Monkey (I use MM to manage ID3 tags) and iTunes to copy to my iPhone. After setting up a windows network drive this process was as easy and seamless as using local storage.

Cons: Do not expect a multimedia powerhouse. Very limited CPU and memory make this a nice network attached storage device, but the extra stuff is limited or barely functional.

I installed and configured sabnzbd on it and was limited in download speed to 1.5 to 2.0 MB/s. Using the same news server my desktop keeps a steady 3.2 MB/s download going. CPU was pegged @ 96%.

I was also copying more files to the NAS via Windows Explorer AND Media Monkey was indexing my music collection (all via good cat 5e cable through internal 1G network ports)...I will re-try sabnzb without all this extra stuff happening. But bottom line this unit does not multi-task well unless you consider staying stable with a pegged CPU good.

Video transcoding is not possible or incredibly slow on this unit. I bought this to have a network attached array, not the multimedia stuff but I did consider the ability to run a DLNA and Plex server locally (ie not on my primary machine) a huge plus. I tried streaming a HD movie from the NAS via DLNA and Plex and neither worked but an older .avi worked fine. There may be ways to tweak and optimize but I don't care enough to try.

Other Thoughts: I like this product so far, I wish I could give it a half egg so it could be 3.5 instead of 4...the unit is good and deserves better than 3 stars but not quite deserving of 4 until I consider I spent < 100.00 for this.

The cloud stuff is clunky and not why I bought this product so I will not call it a pro or con...I was able to get it to function and might re-visit it but I didn't have time to make sure it was secure and reliable.

I'm using WD 4TB green drives (not on the official compatible list) and all is working as expected.

The initial setup using QFinder takes about an hour (downloads firmware and OS to the NAS, builds the array volume) and it took about 8 hours for it to replicate an empty Disk 1 to Disk 2 to build the RAID 1 volume.

Fantastic

Pros: -Remote access from anywhere
-Syncing
-encryption
-anything you need

Cons: playback of video doesn't scale based on connection speed like netflix

Other Thoughts: this thing is great and extremely powerful. i can;'t believe how fast it is to upload files. i have 2 3TB drives connected to the USB3.0 ports on the back and they are FAST. i have mobile access to this this at all times and can play my videos from ANYWHERE. i did not think i was getting something this powerful for such a low price.

Shoot the engineers

Pros: The unit is quiet and simple to assemble.

Cons: This product is a prime example of software engineers that should have been moved to another project. I bought this device to use as a simple NAS. Hardware installation was a breeze then the software nightmare began. Starting with a 600 page user manual describing all varieties of virtual and browser based high tech yet it omits the basic purpose for which most people buy the product; a network drive recognized by the OS on power up. After 2 weeks of wandering through the maze, I finally configured a drive recognized by the OS (Win7). Then the barrage of notices about software updates began, rivaled only by Java for frequency. Well, one of the updates deleted the IP address for my lettered network drives and I cannot spend another 2 weeks retracing my way through the maze again. I need a simple NAS for doing backups. Save all the cloud fluff for the engineers with their faces buried in their phones 23 hours a day. Some of us have a job to do that isn't babysitting a NAS. I'm buying 2 units from the "big houses" and foregoing the frustration of all products with names starting with a "Q".

Other Thoughts: A simple 10 page install manual to cover basic NAS configuration would help a lot. Publish the other 590 pages of virtual ware as a separately priced option for those who want to buy it. See how it sells. Simplicity is elegant.

On 2nd Thought

Pros: It works well, if you don't need to access it outside your LAN or by more than 1 person

Cons: It is worthless if you need to access it outside the LAN by more than 1 person or if you need actual human support.

Other Thoughts: So if you see my review below you'll see I was generally happy with this NAS. That was while I was using it only on the local network. Still good for that purpose. The problems arise when you try to access it outside the LAN and on the web via other PCs. If you want to access it with just the account you use to setup the device in their cloud service it works fine. Also works fine on a cell phone via their qfile app. Want to access it via the user accounts you created with proper security so that each user sees what you want from their own interface, forget it. Support doesn't answer the phone or emails, they direct you to a forum with about as much "help". I've followed every tutorial, every forum post, every web search. Mind you I have setup dozens of NAS previously, am VERY familiar with port forwarding, UPnP, you name it. I even tried a different brand of router all together, nada.

To sum up, if you want it to run locally, not a bad choice.

If you want any worthwhile support or to use it by more than 1 person (with any security at all) outside the office, go elsewhere. In fact, run elsewhere, fast.

Solid little NAS, with exceptions

Pros: Work well with a wide variety of drives, decent options for additional apps, very easy to setup and configure

Cons: Not the fastest NAS out there, limited RAM/CPU power for more demanding functions

Other Thoughts: Overall I've been pretty happy with these units. If you need a simple network file share this would definitely fit the bill. If you're looking for something more high powered or need very high speeds you might want to look up the higher end models as it's pretty easy to max out the CPU in these. Some nice media sharing options built in and it was very easy to configure (plug it in, turn it on, use the qfinder app and follow the prompts to insert drives and configure).

Good until something goes wrong

Pros: The device has a lot of flexibility. Had it configured in raid 1 with two seagate drives, and it was happily running transmission, couchpotato, sickbeard, and sabnzbd for the past 22 months

Cons: The issues with this unit are after a drive failure. Basic approach should be:

1 - Remove bad drive
2 - Add new drive
3 - RAID rebuilds automatically

Did that happen? Of course not. Where the product documentation says it will happen automatically, that never occurred. I ended up having to do the steps of the rebuild manually, and even then they were not really successful. The support from QNAP is questionable and limited to forum posts that do not always address the issue you are having, and the documentation is often out of date or misleading. It's a great product at first, but it does not age well under heavy use.

Recant previous bad review

Pros: Nice GUI features, fast response times compared to earlier versions of small NAS devices. Easy user setup and security features.

Cons: Initial setup/configuration instructions were wrong.

Other Thoughts: I gave this unit a one egg review yesterday. Today I'm recanting. My DOA device was not DOA, but the QNAP Qfinder software that was supposed to run the initial configuration was failing. I finally ignored the setup instructions and went right to the unit's IP in my web browser after Qfinder identified the address. From there I was able to load the firmware and initialize my HDDs (that been failing miserably in the Qfinder setup process). Now I have RAID1 set up, users are setup and secure remote access is ready for use. Nice little cloud system after you get past the setup hurdle.
